Plants 2024 Best Paper Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the “Plants 2024 Best Paper Award” for research and review articles published in Plants from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022. One review and three research articles will receive the award, which will be selected after a thorough evaluation by the journal Award Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Dilantha Fernando.
Eligibility for the Award:
– Papers published in Plants from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022;
– Open to all career levels;
– Both regular and Special Issue submissions will be considered.
Candidates’ Requirements:
The papers will be selected by the journal Award Committee according to the following criteria:
– Scientific merit and broad impact;
– Originality of the research and/or the ideas presented;
– Creativity of the study design or the approaches and concepts;
– Clarity of presentation;
– Citations and downloads.
Prizes:
– One review award: CHF 500 and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Plants in 2024 after peer review;
– Three research article awards: CHF 500 and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Plants in 2024 after peer review.
– Each winner will also receive a certificate.
The winners will be announced on the journal website in March 2024.

Plants 2024 Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Plants will be granting the Travel Award to three junior scientists. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the Plants Editorial Board.
This award provides financial support for the winners to attend an international conference in the field of plant science to be held in 2024, in order to hold a presentation, present a poster, or both.
Candidate Requirements:
- Postdoctoral fellows or PhD students.
- Plans to attend an international conference in 2024 (oral presentation or poster).
Required Application Documents:
- Information of the conference that the applicant is planning to attend and the abstract that will be submitted.
- Curriculum Vitae and list of publications.
- Justification letter describing the focus of the research (max. 800 words).
- Letter of recommendation from the supervisor, research director, or department head, which also confirms the applicant’s status as a postdoctoral fellow/PhD student.
The winners (three awardees) will each be awarded CHF 800 and a certificate.
Please submit your applications for the Plants 2024 Travel Award online by 31 October 2023. Prizes will be awarded at the end of December 2023 and announced on the Plants website.

Plants 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award
Dear Colleagues,
The journal Plants is inviting applications for the 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award. This prize will be awarded to three PhD students or recently qualified PhDs who have produced highly anticipated theses with great academic potential. The applications will be assessed by an evaluation committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Dilantha Fernando.
Eligibility and Requirements:
– The candidate must be a PhD student or recently qualified PhD who has produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential;
– The PhD thesis must be their original work;
– The PhD thesis must be defended in 2023.
Required Application Documents:
– An executive summary of the PhD thesis in English of around 3000 words;
– A letter from the PhD supervisor recommending the candidate for consideration for this award;
– The candidate’s CV, including a list of publications connected with the thesis;
– An electronic copy of the PhD thesis;
– A scanned copy of the PhD diploma (or certificate of studying at a school or research institute as a PhD student going to graduate or participate in graduation thesis defenses).
Selection Criteria:
– Quality of resume and publications;
– Relevance of the candidate and research description;
– Novelty of the candidate’s PhD thesis;
– Strength of the recommendation letter;
– Anticipated academic potential;
– Originality and impact of the research.
Prizes:
– Bonus (CHF 500);
– An electronic certificate;
– Offer to publish one paper free of charge in Plants after peer review before the end of 2024.
The application deadline is 31 January 2024. The winners will be announced on the Plants website by the end of April 2024.

Plants 2023 Outstanding Reviewer Award

Plants 2021 Young Investigator Award

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Plants 2021 Young Investigator Award are Dr. Stefania Sut and Dr. Mohamed Ahmed El-Esawi.
Dr. Stefania Sut is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacology at University of Padova (Italy). Her research interests include natural product chemistry, analysis of natural product, plant secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds from natural sources and food-based products using Mass Spectrometry, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), liquid and gas chromatography and hyphenated techniques such as LC-MS/MS. Dr. Stefania Sut received her PhD in 2021 and has an outstanding publication record, comprising 93 publications in peerreviewed international journals. Her Scopus Scientific Citations number is 1187 and her Hirsch index is 20. She is clearly a rising star in the field of natural products. This is an outstanding achievement in today’s competitive environment. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Stefania Sut for her outstanding achievements.
Dr. Mohamed Ahmed El-Esawi is an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Botany and Microbiology Department, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt. Dr. El-Esawi’s research interests are in molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics, genomics, molecular plant–microbe interactions, molecular plant physiology, developmental biology, and their bioinformatics applications. Dr. El-Esawi received his PhD degree in 2012 from Dublin Institute of Technology, Technological University Dublin in Ireland. He has an outstanding publication record, comprising 110 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and 4 international patents. His Scopus Scientific Citations number is 1993 and his Hirsch index is 30. He is clearly a rising star in the field of plant sciences and molecular biology. Dr. El-Esawi has received several awards and grants to date and ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists in his field. This is an outstanding achievement in today’s competitive environment. Dr. Medina-Puche’s research interests are in molecular plant–virus interactions. Dr. Medina-Puche received her PhD in 2015 and has an outstanding publication record, comprising 18 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, such as Cell, The Plant Cell and Journal of Experimental Botany. Dr. Laura Medina-Puche’s Scopus scientific citations number is 451 and her Hirsch index is 10. She is clearly a rising star in the field of plant sciences. Plants 2018 Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Evaluation Committee, we are pleased to announce the winners of the Plants Travel Awards for 2018.
Travel Awards were granted to Dr. Syed Shane Ali Zaidi, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Liège, and to Justin Mathias, a Ph.D. student at West Virginia University. Dr. Syed Shan e Ali Zaidi will attend the 14th International Plant Virus Epidemiology Symposium (IPVE 2019) from May 13 to May 17, 2019 in Seoul, Korea. and aims to present the following paper: “Combining BAC and Nanopore Ultra-Long Read Sequencing to Resolve Cassava Mosaic Disease Resistance Locus CMD2”. Mr. Justin Mathias will attend the European Geosciences Union in Vienna, Austria, from 7–12 April 2019. His talk is in the session BG2.41 Interdisciplinary Tree-Ring Research under the title “Using a Multiproxy Tree Ring Approach to Examine the Effects of Environmental Change on Eastern U.S. Forests”.
Each awardee will receive 400 CHF (Swiss Francs) and the chance to publish one paper free of charge in Plants in 2019.

We are inviting applications for a Travel Award for postdoc fellow and PhD students in the area of plant science to attend a conference of their choice in 2018. The nominations and applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars in this field.

–Postdoc fellow and PhD students whose research involves plant science
–Attend an international conference in 2018 to present research (either via an oral presentation or poster) in the area of plant science

–Letter of support from their mentors
The award will consist of 800 Swiss Francs
