Cover Story: The morphology of molybdenum coating deposited with high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) on molybdenum-carbide graphite (MoGr). The coating is smooth, and some discontinuities could be related to the substrate morphology. The grains are well-connected, and the separation between them is barely visible. In the fracture surface, we appreciate the columnar structure of the coating and absence of porosities. The combination of the HIPIMS deposition and the MoGr substrate leads to a coating conductivity similar to bulk molybdenum, which is an essential requirement for the new low-impedance collimators that have been foreseen by the High Luminosity LHC project.
