Cover Story: Under-display camera (UDC) systems have emerged as a solution for achieving full-screen smartphone designs by embedding the front-facing camera beneath the display. However, challenges such as poor light transmission and diffraction effect lead to image degradation. To address these issues, this study proposes an approach that combines hybrid frequency–spatial domain learning-based deep neural networks with optical simulations. By generating a synthetic dataset replicating UDC-specific degradations, we enhanced the efficiency of network training. Moreover, the proposed hybrid domain learning method quantitatively demonstrated its effectiveness in restoring degraded images, highlighting the potential of integrating optics and AI to overcome UDC challenges. This methodology could also be applied to other imaging systems facing similar issues, broadening its impact across various fields. View this paper
