Cover Story: Between 2004 and 2017, the Cassini mission explored Saturn and its moons. One of the most shocking discoveries made by Cassini was a giant plume of gas and ice particles emanating from the south pole of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The source of the plume is a subsurface ocean of liquid water that appears to meet all the basic requirements to sustain life. This review examines the composition and structure of Enceladus’ plume, the structure and circulation of the subsurface ocean, possible conditions that may sustain biological activity in the moon’s interior, and the constraints these factors impose on biosignature production and detectability. Different exploration strategies and mission architectures are also considered to test alternative hypotheses about the chemical and biological states of Enceladus. View this paper
