Cover Story: In modern dairy systems, young ruminants are commonly separated from their dams shortly after birth and reared on milk replacer, a practice that often leads to incomplete rumen microbial development and a limited capacity to transition to solid-feed digestion during the post-weaning period. Colostrum contains a diverse array of nutrients and bioactive compounds, including proteins, carbohydrates, immunoglobulins, growth factors, and antimicrobials, which may modulate microbial activity beyond the neonatal period. This in vitro study explores the potential of ovine, bovine, and reconstituted bovine colostrum to support rumen fermentation during weaning, providing new insights into how colostrum-derived components may contribute to a smoother nutritional transition in young ruminants. View this paper
