Minerals, Volume 15, Issue 2

2025 February - 100 articles

Cover Story: The initial nucleus of gemstones preserved at the Natural History Museum in Florence (Italy) is linked to the collection of the Medici family, who began it in the 15th century. The gems belong to several mineral species, including emerald, topaz, grossular, cordierite, quartz, orthoclase, and tourmaline. One gem was identified as a fake, made of glass and likely to have been produced in the 17th century. In some cases, the trace elements and mineral inclusions enabled the determination of potential provenance deposits, which were compared with available archival information. Among the gems, an ancient replica of the Regent Diamond, previously housed in the Uffizi Gallery, was identified. This study contributes to ensuring the preservation of the collection's historical and scientific value. View this paper
