Cover Story: Water conductivity sensing is based on electrical measurements, which are subject to electrode corrosion and subsequent signal drifts during prolonged in situ uses. Furthermore, they cannot provide contactless sensing or remote readout. To overcome these limitations and capitalize on the advantages of modern luminescence lifetime-based dissolved oxygen monitors, a novel sensor for water conductivity has been developed. Its transducer at the distal end of an optical fiber employs a polarity-sensitive ruthenium complex embedded into a quaternary ammonium-functionalized cross-linked polymer support. The degree of swelling of the latter, which leads to a change in the probe’s emission lifetime, depends on the water’s conductivity. The sensor displays a reversible response in 2–3 min within the 0.8–12.8 mS cm−1 conductivity range (KCl). View this paper
