Cover Story: The nonequilibrium thermodynamics of polymeric liquids poses a demanding intellectual and practical challenge for scientists and engineers. Unlike simple, isotropic liquids, the molecular configurational microstructure of long, chain-like polymers contributes a deeper level of complexity to an already challenging problem. Various frameworks of the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of polymers have been proposed over the previous 75 years, but explicit evidence of their validity and usefulness has yet to be provided, principally because of the troublesome fact that the experimental measurement of the entropy of a polymeric liquid is not currently possible. With the advent of realistic macromolecular simulations of melts and solutions over the last decade, it has finally become possible to calculate entropy for these complicated liquids. View this paper.
