The oil and gas industry is a high-risk industry because of the work, meaning that employees in this industry to be very prone to work accidents. Employees who work in isolated locations such as offshore platforms in the long term can experience mental and emotional fatigue, resulting in burnout. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of analyzing and identifying the influence of mental workload and burnout on safety behavior with different roster systems of 2 weeks and 3 weeks in the oil and gas industry. The researchers used several approaches to analyzing mental workload, burnout, and safety behavior using the PLS-SEM method with SMART PLS software. Based on the results obtained from the comparative analysis of the roster systems, it was concluded that the 2-week roster system is better than the 3-week one. This research can also provide information to companies regarding the level of mental workload, burnout, and their relationship with safety behavior and recommendations programs for companies to minimize the risk of accidents by paying attention to the mental health aspects of their employees. Construction and demolition waste management through the reuse of materials has drawn a considerable amount of attention in recent years. Hence, this study examines the diverse approaches to construction and demolition waste reuse in South Africa. Surveying 122 construction professionals, 87 responses were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results show that manufacturing the road base pavement layer from reclaimed asphalt, manufacturing furniture from used timber, using recycled plastic to manufacture plastic strips for soil embankments, and manufacturing fibreglass insulation from recycled glass are the most adopted and significant approaches to construction and demolition waste reuse in South Africa. By embracing these approaches, the construction industry can transition towards more sustainable and resource-efficient practices, thereby minimising waste generation, conserving natural resources, and mitigating environmental impacts. In addressing the challenges of cyber threats in the South African construction sector, the study employed a quantitative methodology involving a questionnaire retrieved from 86 of the study’s respondents. It employed tools like mean item score (MIS), standard deviation (SD), and the pattern matrix of exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The findings revealed critical cybersecurity measures, including adherence to international information security standards such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ISO 27001, or the Cybersecurity Framework by NIST, two-factor authentication, and strategic planning. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of robust cybersecurity frameworks and heightened awareness. This research contributes insights for enhancing cyber resilience in the construction industry, urging stakeholders to prioritize protective measures against cyber risks. Full article

The transition from linear to circular value creation is leading to a fundamental transformation in all areas of manufacturing organisations. Maturity models are used to analyse and support the transformation, but these have deficiencies regarding holism and the ability to process fuzziness. To address these deficiencies, a holistic Fuzzy Logic approach to Circular Economy maturity assessment is proposed. Circular Economy maturity indicators are processed in a multi-stage fuzzy system. This allows for the identification of potential for change in all areas of the organisation to derive actions to improve the organisation’s circularity. Full article

Although the Indonesian government has conducted various interventions to escalate the uptake of rooftop PV in Indonesian households, adoption has still been sluggish. Few studies have been conducted to explore the issue, and these studies are scattered. The paper aims to assess generalizations of the previous studies regarding adopters’ and non-adopters’ characteristics of Indonesian households and their perceptions of rooftop PV attributes using meta-analysis. The findings show that statistically significant differences between the two studies in terms of socio-demographic factors, problem awareness, innovativeness, and perceived qualities of rooftop photovoltaics exist. Despite the differences, the adopters of both studies perceived equally that using renewable energy was important, that rooftop photovoltaics were environmentally friendly, and that they were generally aware of environmental problems. It appears that the non-adopters sample drawn from stratified random sampling demonstrates a similar distribution specified by Diffusion of Innovation. Furthermore, the non-adopters in the two research show a comparable belief regarding the significance of putting renewable energy into practice. Due to inconclusive patterns, an empirical investigation that sufficiently represents both the rooftop PV adopters and non-adopters in Indonesian households is suggested. The purpose of this study is to highlight the existing challenges encountered by traditional construction supply chains and the potential advantages that 3D printing can offer to overcome these challenges. A systematic review was conducted, which revealed a total of eleven (11) obstacles concerning material, cost, and environment. Moreover, eight (8) benefits of 3D printing were identified from various sources in the literature. Furthermore, a framework based on the literature has been proposed to demonstrate how these challenges, functions and benefits can interact with each other in the supply chain. This study identifies barriers hindering solar energy projects in Mexico and explores factors influencing public acceptance. Utilizing latent variables, the research reveals a correlation between low solar energy acceptance and government disinterest. Younger age and higher education levels positively correlate with greater support for environmental conservation and solar projects. Such results emphasize the need for proactive strategies by policymakers, project developers, and other stakeholders in Mexico. Similarly, this study reveals the perception of the participants regarding government’s pivotal role in providing financial incentives and promoting solar initiatives to enhance public trust and acceptance of solar energy. In an age of heightened environmental awareness and the pressing need for net-zero emissions, concerns over rising energy consumption in cement production, responsible for 5–8% of global CO₂ emissions, have intensified. This paper proposes a novel pioneering framework that integrates Shannon’s entropy and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods to steer the cement industry towards sustainability and net-zero emissions. Utilizing Shannon’s entropy, the research impartially determines the significance of multiple criteria, reducing biases in decision-making for energy efficiency in cement production. Four MCDM methods (TOPSIS, VIKOR, ELECTRE, WSM) are applied to rank energy efficiency alternatives, providing a nuanced analysis of options for the cement industry. The study integrates sensitivity analysis to evaluate the robustness of MCDM methods under varying conditions, assessing the impact of changes in criteria weights on the ranking of energy efficiency alternatives and showcasing the adaptability of the proposed framework. Examining six diverse scenarios reveals the framework’s adaptability and the versatility of the Horizontal Roller Mill (HRM), with the Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) emerging as a cost-effective emission reduction alternative. This interdisciplinary approach, integrating information theory, decision science, and environmental engineering, extends beyond industry relevance, providing valuable insights aligned with global sustainability goals. Harmonizing economic viability with ecological responsibility, this report offers an instructive guide, propelling the cement industry toward a more sustainable future. Full article

This literature review explores 30-day emergency room (ER) visits for patients who go through bariatric surgery, an elective surgical procedure. The study delves into obesity and bariatric surgery trends and factors in 30-day postoperative ER visits for bariatric patients, utilizing PubMed and SCOPUS databases. While most published peer-reviewed articles cover a mix of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors, almost no articles focus solely on preoperative factors impacting 30-day postop ER visits. This study contributes to the field in the way that it synthesizes and narrows down preoperative factors in one place and provides recommendations emphasizing these preemptive measures to optimize the healthcare system in the US for the patient population undergoing bariatric procedures. In the future, a model can be developed solely considering the preoperative factors to predict and minimize the possibility of 30-day postop ER visits, which can help reduce cost. Full article

Solid waste management is a crucial task for municipalities in disposing of city waste. Overcoming socioeconomic obstacles in finding appropriate landfill sites involves a multifunctional team using a process that includes selecting criteria and alternatives. In this study, the FUZZY Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and FUZZY TOPSIS were used to rank five landfill alternatives based on seven criteria. Additionally, Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) was employed to establish hierarchical relationships between criteria. MICMAC analysis identified dominant and dependent factors. The study found that Land Capacity carries the highest weight, and the Central Landfill site is the most suitable location. Land Capacity is the dominant factor, while land surface temperature has minimal impact. Roads and communication networks have the highest driving power. The project’s findings can guide the selection of landfill sites and contribute to the development of new sites based on the criteria discussed and their relationships. Full article

Industrial metabolism is a recent field of research in engineering and sustainability. Its practical objective is to provide structural solutions to organizations and regulate the productive, ecological, and economic system. Due to being a relatively new topic and without a known pattern, the present research adapts the 4R (resources) urban metabolism MFA model developed at ETH in Switzerland by Professor Peter Baccini and applies it to a Canadian food startup (Missfresh). Within the adjusted model, clean production tools, circularity plans, ecological design, inventory flow analysis, and the four general study variables (materials, infrastructure, impacts, and standards) were used for solutions within the company. This research seeks two academic results: the metabolic map (static–dynamic animation) that describes the behavior of the company during a period of time, and the industrial metabolism model adapted and validated for subsequent applications. In practical results, the impacts of the model in the 3Es of sustainability in the industry and the sector are evaluated: ecology, ergonomics, and economy. This research is conducted within the framework of an internship to obtain a master’s degree in Sustainable Development and Environment at the University of Montreal. Full article

At inception, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were mostly used for military purposes; however, in today’s technology-driven world, they are used for many more applications. In construction, UAVs can be used for pre-planning, proper surveying of the given area, checking or inspecting safety, 3D printing, quality monitoring and other related objectives. Even though UAVs’ features and capabilities have been highlighted in various prominent studies, they are not being adopted efficiently in the construction industry, necessitating this study. A quantitative research approach was adopted to achieve the set objective of this study. Data were retrieved using a questionnaire survey distributed to construction professionals randomly in the South African construction industry. The retrieved data were analysed using descriptive and inferential data analysis methods. The findings from the analysis revealed that two significant clusters of barriers to adopting UAVs in the construction industry are related to technicalities and security factors. It was concluded that there is a long way to go in adopting UAVs in the construction industry. This study recommended that construction stakeholders take necessary measures to mitigate the identified barriers. This will assist the industry in improving its efficiency and performance. The global consumer goods market is one of the most complex and multi-layered markets, utilizing many supply chain networks daily. Chinese-made exports comprise roughly 35% of the global consumer market, and this figure is only likely to continue increasing given China’s advanced manufacturing and technical abilities. This study develops the framework to analyze the risks of Chinese manufacturers exporting their products to the international markets and ultimately categorize each identified risk factor. Moreover, the Interpretive Structural Model (ISM) is employed to establish a hierarchical relationship between the risk factors, whereas the MICMAC method is used to analyze the categorical nature of each risk factor. Of the nine risk factors identified, two (New Competitors, War and Geopolitical Conflicts) resulted in the highest “V” risk rating, while one (Consumer Behavior) of the nine risk factors identified represented the lowest level “I” of risk. Prospective Chinese manufacturers that are looking to export consumer goods can use this research to aid in mitigating certain risk factors associated with entering the international market. Utilizing turbines for wind energy is crucial for sustainable power. The effectiveness of turbines heavily relies on the blades, making material selection vital for their design. This study employs multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), particularly intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) in the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, to facilitate material selection. The Intuitionistic Fuzzy Weighted Averaging (IFWA) operation aggregates the ideas of the decision-makers (D-Ms), prioritizing criteria and alternatives. The combined method, blending the Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set (IFS) and TOPSIS, proves highly efficient in determining the most suitable material among alternatives based on established criteria. The findings highlight carbon fiber as the premier choice, suggesting its adoption for enhanced wind turbine blades. Full article

This research aims to comprehensively analyze the influential challenges within the healthcare system of Bangladesh using the DEMATEL–ISM-based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approach. The Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) methodology will be used to identify, evaluate, and prioritize challenges that have a notable impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery in Bangladesh. The ISM methodology will help create hierarchical structures of challenges and explore the interdependencies among different factors. DEMATEL, a robust tool in decision science, will assist in understanding complex relationships among various criteria. Through this approach, this study intends to reveal the interconnections and causal relationships among different challenges, providing a systematic understanding of their impact on the healthcare system. Population growth was found to be the most challenging factor in the healthcare system of Bangladesh. The outcomes of this research are expected to contribute valuable insights to policymakers, healthcare practitioners, and stakeholders involved in the enhancement of the healthcare system in Bangladesh. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set in Agenda 2030, are examined in this study, along with India’s progress towards attaining them, and creative solutions based on forecasting and optimization modelling are presented. We investigate the complex alternatives between economic development, mainly focusing on GDP, sustainability—environmental concerns—and employment—a problem at the core of India’s sustainable development. We examine India’s development across several sectors like agriculture, mining, trades, construction, and so on, using a lexicographic goal programming framework, developing a hierarchical structure with four different levels and prioritizing the most important goal. Decisions are made from the highest priority level to the lowest priority level. Research goes beyond assessment by providing practical solutions to problems. A numerical study highlight the applicability of our strategy. By emphasizing the relevance of coordinating progress across decision-making levels for a more equal, prosperous, and sustainable future by 2030, this research delivers customized, context-aware solutions to accelerate India’s achievement of the SDG goals. In manufacturing and service industries, transportation often faces uncertain conditions. While current research on the truck and trailer routing problem (TTRP) mostly uses deterministic methods, they fall short in addressing uncertainties in travel and service times. This study aims to improve TTRP models by incorporating randomness in travel and service durations and specific time windows, better mirroring real-world scenarios. The enhanced model uses the multipoint simulated annealing (M-SA) method for practical application. The study involves 144 benchmark instances across six levels, starting with generating feasible solutions, then refining them using M-SA. A stochastic programming model with recourse (SPR) was used for problem formulation. Sensitivity analysis assessed the impact of various parameters and compared solutions obtained from M-SA and the analysis, showing minimal differences and thus the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in solving the stochastic TTRP. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research. Full article

The transformative impact of technological advancements has ushered in a new era in education, digitizing traditional learning approaches into accessible E-learning platforms. In the context of India, where students increasingly rely on digital education, the multitude of available platforms has introduced a challenge: selecting the most suitable one. This project addresses this concern by providing information on the optimal E-learning platform. The selection is based on critical criteria such as cost-effectiveness, user experience, technological factors, assessment methods, and the quality of education. To determine the significance of each criterion and rank them, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy-AHP) method is employed. Subsequently, the Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (Fuzzy-TOPSIS) is utilized to evaluate and identify the best E-learning platform. The key findings from this research aim to guide students, educators, and institutions in making informed decisions about E-learning platforms, ultimately enhancing the digital learning experience for Indian students. Forecasting carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions has become a relevant issue. International organizations have emphasized the necessity of generating a plan to gradually reduce the concentrations of this pollutant to combat climate change. Cement industries represent one of the key sectors expected to solve this problematic. The objective of this study is to predict CO₂ emissions for North American cement industries. To achieve this, a multi-objective mathematical model is developed, integrating various machine learning algorithms. The results demonstrate a considerable improvement in accuracy metrics, with a 48.13% reduction in Mean Absolute Error achieved using the Generalized Reduced Gradient method (GRG). The forecasts reveal an increment in emissions from about 0.58 MtCO₂ every year between 2020 and 2050. The proposed framework can help decision makers and policy makers focus on the technical and logistics requirements to meet net-zero emissions targets. Full article

In recent years, digital technologies have emerged as a key driver of intelligence and visibility in supply chain management, offering companies a competitive edge to enhance sustainability. Despite the various benefits, digitalization introduces risks to supply chain sustainability. This paper aims to assess and prioritize these risks using a multi-criteria decision-making method (Fuzzy-VIKOR approach). Drawing from existing literature, criteria, alternatives (risks), and a decision matrix are established. The findings reveal that the risk of a lack of qualifications in information technology skills is the most critical among 12 factors, significantly impacting sustainability performance indicators. This novel approach contributes a fresh perspective to the literature on the risk assessment of digitalization in supply chain sustainability. Full article

The deteriorating state of North America’s bridge infrastructure is a pressing issue, necessitating innovative risk management strategies. This study aims to enhance the seismic resilience of bridge infrastructure using a Bayesian belief network (BBN) model. The research uses literature review, expert opinions, and a Bayesian analysis framework to quantify bridge resilience, despite the scarcity of detailed historical data. The model, supported by conditional probability tables (CPTs), captures the complex interdependencies among parameters and uncertainties in seismic resilience assessment. Preliminary findings show that integrating expert judgment with BBN provides a robust methodology for assessing and enhancing bridge resilience to seismic hazards. This approach contributes to measuring bridge infrastructure resilience and offers practical guidance for policymakers, engineers, and stakeholders in sustainable transportation network development. The paper presents a study related to the implementation of failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). The analysis consists of the identification, assessment, monitoring, and control of potential failure modes specific to the injection process applied to veneer trim parts. Based on the Ishikawa diagram, potential failure modes, effects, and causes of failure can be determined. The assessment results show that the potential risks are mostly located in the medium and high zones. By implementing corrective action, the process is significantly improved, and the potential risks are located in the low and medium zones. From a qualitative point of view, the Pareto chart allows prioritization of the defects that appear for the analyzed manufacturing process. It can be noted that the first two types of identified defects represent 27% of the total defects. Full article

Heart failure, a chronic and progressive condition where the heart muscle fails to pump sufficient blood for the body’s needs, leads to complications like irregular heartbeat and organ damage. It is a leading cause of death worldwide, with 17.9 million annual fatalities. Often diagnosed late due to complex, costly screenings, current treatments are less effective at advanced stages, necessitating novel early detection methods. This research develops intelligent systems using a Fuzzy Inference System and Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network, focusing on eleven heart-affecting parameters. The study shows artificial intelligence-based models outperform current medical diagnostics in early heart disease detection. The models were evaluated using 221 datasets. The obtained result demonstrates that the performance parameters of the FIS model provide superior results compared to the ANN model. The developed FIS system’s accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity are 90.50%, 90.91%, 90.50%, and 90.31%, respectively. A graphical user interface (GUI) is developed using the MATLAB App Designer tool to facilitate the system’s practical applicability for the end users. Full article

This study investigates the adoption of green design strategies in Nigerian public buildings, focusing on architects’ perspectives and practices. Through qualitative interviews, architects demonstrated a shift towards sustainability, emphasising passive design, active technologies, water conservation, and sustainable materials. Challenges of the adoption include cost constraints and technical complexities, among others. The study recommends that prioritised collaborative action, community engagement, and policy advocacy would facilitate the implementation of green architecture. Despite limitations, the study findings contribute to Nigeria’s architectural landscape sustainability. The study underscores the potential for Nigeria to lead in sustainable architecture, aligning with global goals for climate resilience and environmental stewardship. Full article

In this era of digitalization, many companies that aim to improve the sustainability of their supply chain utilize digital technologies. Digital technologies have provided the overall supply chain with more transparency, visibility, and real-time data exchange. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of early studies related to the impacts of digitalization on supply chain sustainability. The literature review is carried out by using the PRISMA method (the preferred reporting item for systematic reviews and meta-analyses). To carry out the review, 53 English-language publications were analyzed. The data were collected from Web of Science and Science Direct, and the systematic literature review will consider the impacts of digitalization on supply chain sustainability. Based on the literature, the overall impact of digitalization on supply chain sustainability is positive, but it brings some challenges as well. This paper also identifies potential gaps that were not covered in earlier publications and provides suggestions for future studies. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a complete and up-to-date literature review considering the impact of overall digital technologies on sustainability from a global perspective that summarizes the publications related to this topic. Moreover, in this paper, the challenges or risks of digitalization will be considered, which has received less attention in previous papers. Full article

Prostate cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer in Canada, with mortality rates exhibiting exponential growth among men aged 50 and older and, thus, poses a substantial public health challenge. This paper aims to demonstrate the potential of machine learning in predicting prostate cancer based on many of the risk factors as well as attempting to study some of the commonly used machine learning models as a predictor for prostate cancer. In this study, we assess the performance of diverse models, including Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), General Linear Model (GLM), and a deep learning approach known as Feed Forward Network (FFN). Notably, our results reveal that the FFN model surpasses the other models in its predictive accuracy for prostate cancer. Full article

The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate by Canada’s federal government is a significant initiative towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050. In this context, to quantify the evolution scale of ZEVs alongside charging pile, a system dynamics (SD)-based policy simulation has been adopted for the city of Regina, Saskatchewan. The vector autoregressive model (VAR) equation is used as an input equation in the SD model for predicting ZEV sales. For model validity, calibration of the data with an available historical dataset alongside a sensitivity analysis has been performed. The SD model with two consecutive scenarios has been simulated until 2036, and “policy 2” has been found to be adequate. Full article

The production processes in the clothing industry are labor-intensive; as such, efficiency is reduced due to human error and fatigue. This study aims to streamline the manufacturing process of the clothing industry to improve efficiency. The study employs line balancing, layout redesign, and value stream mapping to improve efficiency and reduce waste in a clothing industry production line. The study results indicate improved efficiency and productivity due to waste elimination. It is recommended that process improvement tools such as takt time monitoring, line balancing, and layout design be implemented in clothing industries to reduce waste and improve productivity. This paper analyzes healthcare supply chain shortcomings during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in supplying personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare personnel. It addresses the need for effective PPE stockpile strategies, considering past inadequacies. A linear programming model is presented to determine optimal PPE stockpile levels, factoring in unpredictable demand and variable supplier costs. The study includes a comparative analysis of scenarios with and without stockpiling strategies. Moreover, we employ the Morris method for comprehensive sensitivity analysis, focusing on key factors, namely: demand, supply from traditional and non-traditional sources, and stockpile capacity. These insights are vital for policymakers to develop better PPE stockpiling methods, thus improving healthcare crisis management. Full article

The study examines the effects of semiconductor scarcity on the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain caused by an increase in electronics demand after the 2020 automobile industry downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rising demand for semiconductor chips in the automotive industry, especially in EVs, necessitates strategic measures for original equipment manufacturers and suppliers to strengthen supply chain resilience. This study uses a consequence-based decision-making framework that uses a hybrid Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method with Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM). By leveraging this innovative approach, the research unveils complex causal relationships among supply chain strategies, providing quantifiable insights for prioritizing resilience in the face of multifaceted risks such as trade wars, regulatory changes, and raw material shortages. In addition, the study enhances our comprehension of supply chain resilience within the electric vehicle sector by illuminating aspects that have not been thoroughly examined by the Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique employed in this research. The analysis includes the adoption of multisourcing, fostering ecosystem partnerships, and improving supply chain visibility. Through these novel insights, this analysis aims to empower stakeholders and small- to medium-sized enterprises to navigate future automotive market dynamics, with a focus on evolving manufacturer–supplier relationships in the midst of technological advancements. Facilities management (FM) is pivotal in ensuring the efficient operation of built environments essential for organisational functions. However, buildings’ operation and maintenance stages often incur significant costs, emphasising the importance of effective FM practices. Digital technology, particularly Virtual Reality (VR), offers innovative solutions to enhance FM in the construction industry. Despite its potential benefits, VR adoption faces various barriers, such as financial constraints and a lack of standardisation, expertise, and awareness. This study aims to explore the application benefits of VR in FM within the South African construction industry, addressing the knowledge gap in the existing literature. A comprehensive literature review identifies key benefits of VR application for FM. Strategies to improve VR implementation include the development of cost-effective solutions, extensive training programs, and collaborative initiatives with stakeholders and government agencies. By leveraging VR technology, FM practices can be revolutionised, improving safety, communication, and project optimisation. This study provides insights into overcoming challenges and harnessing the transformative potential of VR in FM, paving the way for a more efficient, safe, and sustainable built environment in the South African construction industry. In this paper, an assessment of the quantitative and qualitative defects involved in automotive veneer trim parts manufacturing has been presented. The comparative qualitative analyses were carried out using Poisson process capability estimation and a Pareto chart. The visual surface inspection of the veneer trims was aimed to identify the types of defects resulting from the manufacturing process. The results indicate that the percentage of defects for the first sample are between 2.1% and 4.4% and the values for the second category are situated between 1.2% and 2.2%. Using 95% confidence intervals (CIs), the main statistical parameters were estimated. Also, the inferential analysis highlights that the specified acceptable percentage of rejects was not exceeded. The adoption of building information modelling in construction projects has a transformative impact, driving improvements in collaboration, efficiency, quality, sustainability, and regulatory compliance throughout the project lifecycle. This systematic review examines client satisfaction and success factors in BIM-enabled projects. Building information has emerged as a transformative technology in the construction industry, promising enhanced collaboration, efficiency, and project outcomes. Understanding client satisfaction and the factors contributing to project success in BIM-enabled projects is crucial for stakeholders aiming to maximise the benefits of BIM adoption. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, this review synthesises key findings related to client satisfaction levels, as well as the critical success factors influencing project outcomes in BIM-enabled environments. The review highlights the importance of effective communication, collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and technological infrastructure in ensuring client satisfaction and project success. Additionally, it identifies gaps in current research and offers recommendations for future studies to further advance our understanding of client satisfaction and success factors in BIM-enabled projects. Electronic waste is a global problem in our tech-driven age and is becoming more and more so as new devices are released and tonnes of electronics are thrown away. The objective of this study is to determine which materials are essential in electronic waste, to evaluate the environmental impact of those materials, and to investigate the ways in which implementing a circular supply chain and circular economy principles can support economic expansion. This study identifies valuable materials like gold, silver, copper, palladium, cobalt, mercury, and lithium using the Prisma approach and a quantitative method. Mercury is found to have a significant environmental impact. With its special insights into material disposal and environmental consequences, the practical application highlights profitability and material waste reduction in multinational cell phone manufacturing companies. Bridges, like any other infrastructure, deteriorate over time, and the more they degrade, the more expensive it becomes to perform maintenance activities on them. Therefore, it is important to predict their deterioration and plan intervention programs from economic and functionality points of view. While deterministic models are used to predict the deterioration of a structure, they do not consider any maintenance activities carried out beforehand. In this paper, we adjusted the deterioration model to overcome those limitations and planned an intervention program for the bridges of Ontario for 2023–2025. To achieve this, we cleaned the dataset; formulated the models; ran simulations with multiple deterministic and stochastic models to find the best one; adjusted the model equation to account for various levels of previous maintenance works; formulated the intervention action requirement for the next three years by developing an algorithm to reflect previous maintenance trends and their effects on the condition ratings; prepared an equalized work requirement for each year; and prioritized the action requirements based on a proposed risk matrix. Finally, an exhaustive plan with an action requirement for all the bridges was prepared for 2023–2025. The proposed plan will help decision makers to take proper action to maintain the serviceability of the bridges. Full article

Purpose—This study examines the relationships among factors that can potentially influence the effectiveness of operations management in real-time productivity accounting data that can measure the real-time performance of any business operations. The focus is to develop and research this area of productivity management to advance its implementation and adoption in improving business operations. The study objective is to review productivity management-related fields to reveal the location of attention of previous studies. A bibliometric analysis was adopted for this investigation, and data were gathered from the Web of Science (ISI). Keywords such as “Productivity management”, “Productivity measurement”, and “Productivity Improvement” were selected to source documentation from the database. VOSviewer was chosen as the most advanced system that can be used to formulate a co-authorship and co-occurrence map based on the bibliographic data gathered. The study findings discovered that the emphasis is placed on time, systems, impact, work, cost, and labour productivity. The research findings exposed a knowledge gap in the literature that can be explored in emerging countries, predominantly, in Africa, to improve operations management by improving productivity measurements within the continent. This project aims to put forth a step-by-step procedure to preprocess data and utilize data analytics tools to provide meaningful insights to make business intelligent decisions for companies. This study explores the drivers of cloud data management (CDM) usage in the South African built environment. A quantitative research approach was adopted for this study through the use of a well-structured questionnaire distributed to construction professionals and IT experts in Gauteng province, South Africa. Principal component analysis (PCA) and descriptive statistics procedures were used to analyse the retrieved data. The findings revealed that the most significant drivers for using CDM services are sustainable data management, improved project life cycle management, and technological advancement. This study concluded that technological progress and sustainability in the construction industry drive CDM usage. Full article

We investigate how these factors affect the adoption of sustainable products through an empirical study involving a variety of types of consumers. Our study’s findings have major implications for the academic and business communities. Microcontact printing (µCP) has become an emerging method for creating exact patterns on a range of substrates. This short review paper seeks to give a brief summary of the developments, fabrication techniques, applications, and difficulties in the microcontact printing of polymeric devices. In this systematic review, 20 papers from various fields were chosen for study. This review begins by introducing the basics of microcontact printing and discussing its capacity to transfer predetermined patterns with submicron resolution from an elastomeric stamp to substrates. Then, various microcontact printing production techniques for polymeric devices are reviewed. Furthermore, this review explores the broad range of applications enabled by microcontact printing, including electronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and surface engineering. Additionally, the potential difficulties and challenges associated with using microcontact printing processes are discussed. This literature review is to give researchers and practitioners a thorough understanding of microcontact printing by integrating the results from a few chosen studies. It promotes additional study and innovation in this promising sector by highlighting the most recent advancements, manufacturing techniques, and difficulties related to the manufacture of polymeric devices. This research compares the performance of structural steel and general aluminum alloys in identical crank arm designs when bearing loads are applied at different stages of paddling, such as starting, climbing, and racing. Finite element analysis (FEA) was utilized to evaluate fatigue life and safety factors. A design modification strategy was proposed to reduce critical stress in failure zones, resulting in an increased fatigue life. Although steel and aluminum alloys both have significant life and nominal high fatigue life during racing and climbing, respectively, aluminum alloys are unable to withstand a 1815 N starting load, even after modification. This study addresses the imperative for sustainability in the construction industry, focusing on the environmental impact of a specific 3D printing method. Leveraging insights from an engineering-orientated 3D printing project, diverse scenarios are explored, and a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted using SimaPro 9.5.0 software. The study reveals the efficacy of a mix design with fly ash and furnace slag as a binder, demonstrating lower environmental impacts in various categories. However, the inclusion of silicate in geo-polymer concrete raises ecological concerns due to the high energy requirements for production. Additionally, substituting sand with sawdust results in a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions, highlighting the environmental benefits of incorporating by-product materials into building practices. The fast progress of 3D printing technology has resulted in the creation of innovative materials, such as elastic resins, broadening the field of applications in various sectors. This paper investigates the effect of printing parameters on the strength and elongation of the final part, as well as optimizing elastic resin 3D printing processes using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) analyses. In this analysis, the printing parameters post-curing time, exposure time, aging conditions, rotation direction, rest time after lift, photoinitiator effect, and aging time are considered criteria. The report finishes with recommendations for the most effective parameter settings for the best sample elongation (ε) and tensile strength (E). Full article

Saskatchewan boasts an extensive road network, spanning over 250,000 km and featuring more than 26,500 culverts that facilitate the flow of water. Ensuring the timely replacement of these culverts is of paramount importance to prevent potential disasters and safeguard water quality. This research focuses on the prioritization of infrastructure renewal, with a particular emphasis on metal culverts. This study undertakes a rigorous evaluation of two statistical and computational methods—ordinal logistic regression and a fuzzy inference system—through an exhaustive examination of 1000 metal culverts situated along Saskatchewan’s highway network. Performance evaluation metrics, including area under the curve, percentage of correct predictions, confusion matrix analysis, accuracy, precision, recall, and the F1 score, consistently highlight the fuzzy inference system method as the superior and most efficacious approach for prioritizing culvert renewal within this crucial infrastructure context. With substantial advancements in the additive manufacturing (AM) of polymers and metals in the last few decades, the AM of ceramic material has recently gained research traction. Manufacturing complex ceramic parts is an extremely challenging process that can be revolutionized by AM. While many industrial-grade expensive AM systems are available for printing ceramic parts, the use of inexpensive desktop-type extrusion AM systems for ceramic parts is particularly challenging, which mandates printing parameter optimization. In this paper, the printing parameters of an inexpensive extrusion AM system, such as layer height, line width, extrusion speed, infill, and flow percentage, were optimized, which resulted in ceramic parts with desired qualities in terms of part density. For this, Clay Body 370 was chosen to produce clay with different percentages of water content ranging from 5% to 15%. Printed samples were subjected to sintering in a furnace to sinter at 1100 °C, followed by shrinkage and weight loss measurements. Finally, the printing parameters that resulted in good surface quality and less dimensional shrinkage with higher compression strength were reported. Full article

Enormous amounts of patient data, including information on their liver, diabetes, heart, and maternal health, are being generated by medical sectors. The preventive approach requires an examination of health records which is quite difficult; therefore, adopting machine learning (ML) technology that identifies early CVD is necessary. In this work, we used three different boosting techniques, namely, AdaBoost, gradient boosting, XgBoost, and stacked boosting algorithms, as well as a combination of these algorithms with and without hyperparameter tuning to predict CVD patients. Our analysis showed that, compared to a single boosting model, the recall score of the stacked boosting algorithm is much higher, demonstrating a 92.85% recall score after using hyperparameter tuning. Our predicted model will help hospital associates to take preventive measures in these cases as well as properly allocate the resources for hospital managers and, lastly, reduce the financial burdens of the patients. Stereolithography (SLA) is a 3D printing technology that uses a laser to cure liquid resin from a tank, layer by layer, to create highly detailed and precise objects. However, this 3D printing technique requires a large amount of resin material to be placed in the bath that is exposed to UV each time a layer is printed. On the other hand, extrusion 3D printing offers the printing of a part by dispensing only the desired amount of material on demand. However, extrusion 3D printing does not result in the intricate high-resolution features that can be achieved in SLA. To be able to 3D-print high-resolution parts without needing a large resin bath, a dispensing system was designed that would deposit only the required amount of resin on demand while high-resolution capability is achieved by curing the deposited resin using a UV laser. To ensure the isotropic properties of the printed parts, fluid flow simulations of the polymer resin through the designed dispensing system were performed. Therefore, the primary objectives were twofold: (1) designing a resin dispensing system including a specialized nozzle to promote laminar flow and (2) conducting fluent simulations to analyze the nozzle’s performance. The fluent simulations provided valuable insights into the fluid dynamics, affirming the nozzle’s efficiency in ensuring a consistent and controlled laminar flow of the resin during the dispensing process. Initially aimed at rectifying water systems in Pakistan, this study expanded to develop a versatile implementation structure applicable to various guidelines. The methodology integrates a Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) with an Excel-based evaluation tool, facilitating systematic assessment against WHO standards. Challenges such as limited flexibility and complexity of use are acknowledged, suggesting the need for ongoing refinement. Future research directions include automated assessment tools, integration with IoT and data analytics, enhanced customization, and integration with regulatory databases. This study investigates cellular negative stiffness honeycomb (NSH) structures in the prospect of energy absorption and vibration isolation. The energy absorption properties for different geometrical parameters have been investigated for a specific displacement in the range of linear compression. The force–displacement characteristics of NSH structures with various AM materials have been investigated using the finite element analysis method. The results have revealed the parametric relation of the NSH with the energy absorbed, specific energy absorption, stiffness, and compressive stress. The analysis highlights the NSH structures’ potential to enhance material efficiency and performance optimization, contributing to material and manufacturing engineering. Full article

Surface electromyography (sEMG) signal classification is pivotal for evaluating neuromuscular function, especially in applications like rehabilitation and prosthetics. This paper introduces a novel Deep Neural Network (DNN) approach based on a Smooth, Filled outliers, Detrended, and Normalized (SFDN) dataset for SEMG signal classification in hand movement recognition. Through a comparative study with existing methods, our results highlight SFDN+DNN’s remarkable classification accuracy—99.63%, 95.56%, and 96.14% on the UCI, Ninapro DB6, and Mendeley datasets, respectively. Notably, this approach offers online training capabilities at a low cost, presenting a significant advancement over traditional methods. Our findings suggest SFDN+DNN’s potential in enhancing the efficiency of mechanical prosthetic hands, bridging the gap toward quasi-real-hand capabilities. Full article

This study explored extrusion-based 3D bioprinting as a method for depositing cell-laden bio-ink to create well-defined scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Natural hydrogels, known for their biocompatibility and low cell toxicity, were favored for bio-ink formulation in this process. However, their limited mechanical strength poses a challenge to maintaining structural integrity. To address this, the rheological properties of hybrid hydrogels containing cellulose-derived nanofiber (TONFC) at concentrations between 0.5% and 1.0%, along with alginate and gelatin at levels between 2% and 5%, were tested in this study. A total of eight formulations was created by adjusting the proportions of alginate, TO-NFC, and gelatin, resulting in a combined solid content of 8%. Various rheological properties, such as the flow behavior, recovery rate, and linear viscoelastic range, were analyzed. Bi-layer scaffolds were 3D printed with various compositions and the shape fidelity was investigated. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were mixed to prepare bio-ink and cell survivability was observed after 7 incubation days. The ability to control 3D printability and the favorable survival of cells make nanofiber-infused alginate–gelatin a promising option for creating precisely shaped scaffolds using the 3D bio-printing process. Unlike polymers and metals, additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramic parts has only recently become an increasingly important technology, thanks to ceramic’s exceptional thermal and chemical properties. Most of the AM-processed ceramic parts must undergo a sintering process that adds additional challenges. Managing post-sintering shrinkage remains a critical challenge that impacts the dimensional accuracy and integrity of the final printed components. This is particularly important for intricate designs if the part has triply periodic minimal surface lattice structures. This study systematically analyzes the effect of lattice parameters, namely cell sizes along the X, Y, and Z axes, lattice type, and wall thickness on the post-sintering shrinkage. A number of samples with different lattice parameters were designed and printed with an LCD 3D resin printer using commercially available aluminosilicate resin. Later, the specimens were subjected to the same sintering process, and the dimensions of the green bodies and sintered parts were studied to measure volumetric and linear shrinkages. Full article

Triply periodic minimal surface lattice structures are three-dimensional arrays of complex cells that can only be efficiently manufactured by 3D printing. The mechanical properties of these lattice structures depend on lattice parameters such as cell sizes along the X, Y, and Z axes, and wall thickness. Designing such lattice structures for soft polymers permits the manufacturing of polymer foams with controllable mechanical stiffnesses. The objective of this work is to design and 3D print polymeric foams made of lattice structures and evaluate the effect of lattice parameters on the resulting stiffness. Lattice parameters define the lattice geometry and stiffness. Ten specimens with different lattice parameters were designed and 3D printed using a low-cost desktop liquid crystal display 3D printer using ultra-violet-curable resin. Then, following ASTM D3574-17, these samples were subjected to compression tests. An experimental analysis was conducted to examine the deformation characteristics of these structures, focusing on parameters such as yield strain, initial stiffness, and the maximum force at 50% compression. This study aims to enhance the effectiveness of the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) method. Traditional FMEA, relying solely on the risk priority number (RPN), neglects uncertainties and the ambiguity in decision-makers’ assessments. This oversight, coupled with the disregard for weighted risk criteria (O, S, and D), diminishes FMEA’s precision. To address this, a novel FMEA approach introduces additional criteria (P, E, C, and T) and employs a three-phase methodology: traditional RPN determination, rough set model for rough weight calculation, and rough-TOPSIS for failure mode scoring. By combining the benefits of TOPSIS for decision-making with the power of rough set models for managing ambiguities, this innovative method demonstrates its potential in ambiguous and subjective environments. Application to a reciprocating pump and compressor reveals critical failure modes, with bearing failure and flange leakage being most and least critical for the pump, respectively, and the compressor operating outside the design envelop and coupling failure having the highest and lowest criticality, respectively, for the compressor in the rough-TOPSIS analysis. While power transformer manufacturers are well versed in electrical aspects such as ampere-turns and amps per square inch, optimizing electrical efficiency, voltage regulation, and insulation, there is a potential oversight regarding the intricate mechanical challenges associated with electrical design. As transformers evolve in size and capacity, mechanical forces become increasingly significant, necessitating a closer examination of the mechanical aspects of electrical design. This study focuses on the design of power transformer tank walls. To address the challenge associated with larger tank wall deflection (for both the high-voltage and low-voltage sides) during pressure tests, different stiffeners such as flat stiffeners, changed flat stiffener dimensions, flat bar supports for stiffeners, and H-beams were added to the tank wall and modeled for finite element analysis. The tank wall design was optimized for higher mechanical strength, lower deflection, and lower mass by assessing the von Mises stress and deformation of different stiffeners. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of how design adjustments affects mechanical strength, stress distribution, and overall reliability, providing valuable insights for the industry. The industry heavily relies on robotic manipulators at present. Despite their age, recent methodologies have significantly advanced their functionality, integrating them into daily life. Rescue robots are popular. However, their precision and reaction speed are the main issues for real-world rescuing. This research aims to enhance the precision of rescue robotic manipulators’ end-effectors in real time. It achieves this by deriving and solving inverse kinematics formulations for 2-, 3-, and 4-link manipulators using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The PSO method proves highly accurate, outperforming previous studies utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). While PSO requires more time than ANNs, a hybrid approach, PSO-ANN, balances accuracy and speed, offering real-time solutions with minimal errors, and contributing to a precise methodology for real-time robotic manipulator operations. Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as one of the core components of the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0. Among others, the extrusion AM (EAM) of thermoplastic materials has been named as the most widely adopted technology. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) relies on the commercial availability of expensive filaments; hence, pellet extruder-based EAM techniques are desired. Large-format EAM systems would benefit from the ability to print lightweight objects with less materials and lower power consumption, which is possible with the use of hollow extrudates rather than solid extrudates to print objects. In this work, we designed a custom extruder head and developed an EAM system that allows the extrusion of inflatable hollow extrudates of a relatively wide material choice. By incorporating a co-axial nozzle–needle system, a thermoplastic shell was extruded while the hollow core was generated by using pressurized nitrogen gas. The ability to print using hollow extrudates with controllable inflation allows us to print objects with gradient part density with different degrees of mechanical properties. In this article, the effect of different process parameters, namely, extrusion temperature, extrusion speed, and gas pressure, were studied using poly-lactic acid (PLA) pellets. Initially, a set of preliminary tests was conducted to identify the maximum and minimum ranges of these parameters that result in consistent hollow extrudates. Finally, the parameters were varied to understand how they affect the core diameter and shell thickness of the hollow extrudates. These findings were supported by analyses of microscopic images taken under an optical microscope. Full article

Surveying 120 construction professionals, 110 responses were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results show that constraints including lack of recycling facilities, resistance to change, absence of appropriate technology, limited availability of materials, lack of information about recycled products, and lack of proper standards are significant obstacles to clients’ acceptance of recycled construction materials. Addressing logistical challenges, such as enhancing material availability and accessibility through improved recycling infrastructure and awareness campaigns, is crucial for overcoming these constraints. In this age of global advancement in technology, environmental sustainability has become increasingly important. Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity due to their lower carbon impact. One of the most important components of an electric vehicle (EV) is its lithium-ion battery. Increased use of lithium-ion battery (LIB) packs has produced a possible concern in the form of excess LIBs unless adequate recycling or remanufacturing procedures are followed. To repurpose previously used LIBs in an eco-friendly and efficient way, it is essential to implement appropriate reverse logistics procedures. This field of research holds significant potential for the future of the automotive sector. In this study, we briefly reviewed spent LIB management, recycling procedures, demographic locations, remanufacturing concerns, transportation costs, deterioration, and regulations in North America. A brief review of the reverse logistics for lithium-ion batteries improves comprehension and paves the way for future research considerations in this evolving field. Full article

Achieving these success criteria requires (1) re-establishing diversified rare earth production and (2) finding new sources of competitive advantage to create long-term stability for the diversified industry. The goal of this study is to find out how corporate social responsibility (CSR) affects managers’ commitment to sustainability and the long-term success of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Pakistan. In addition to that, this study aims to find out how a manager’s focus on sustainability affects CSR activities and how these activities affect the economic, social, and environmental performance of a company in Pakistan. People who own or run small businesses in Pakistan’s manufacturing sector filled out survey questionnaires that were used to collect the data. Using the software SmartPLS 3.0, a statistical method called partial least square structural equation modeling was used to look at the research model. The findings show that CSR acts as a bridge between managers’ and owners’ sustainability goals and employees’ sustainability goals. Full article

Supply chain management integration in construction project delivery emerged from strategies to improve competitiveness, increase profits, and gain control over the various factors influencing project delivery and performance. Hence, this study assesses the challenges of supply chain management in construction project delivery using the perspective of construction professionals in South Africa. A structured questionnaire was developed to obtain data from construction professionals in Durban, South Africa. Descriptive statistics and the Kruskal–Wallis test were conducted to determine construction professionals’ perspectives towards challenges affecting supply chain management in construction project delivery. According to the study’s findings, the essential challenges affecting supply chain management in construction project delivery in South Africa include weak procurement strategies, difficulties with scheduling flexibility, poor construction design, poor budget management, non-integration of automation systems in the SCM process, insufficient planning of the project before starting, and sub-contractors’ lack of understanding of SCM concepts. The study recommends that construction project delivery be guided by effective procurement systems, effective budget management, integration of automation in the supply chain, and enabling government policies. Dependency on fossil fuels for global energy demand has led to an increase in the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere, thereby contributing to environmental challenges such as climate change, rise in atmospheric temperature, etc. Since the major contributions of CO₂ emissions are from industries, capturing CO₂ from post-combustion flue gas has become the focus of many research communities. As such, membrane-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an important pathway for controlling CO₂ emissions. However, performance validation for membrane separation is required to find the best composite material with a high diffusion rate. Hence, the objectives of this research included determining the performance of the nanocomposite membranes comprising polyether-block-amide (PEBAX) as a matrix and carbon nanotube (CNT) and armchair graphene as reinforcements as well as obtaining the flue gas diffusion rate using molecular dynamic (MD) analysis. Two different composition ratios of the flue gas with an equal ratio (1:1) and an actual post-combustion ratio were developed. The molecular dynamic simulation results obtained from LAMMPS and OVITO determined that graphene-based nanocomposites were better suited for the diffusion of the CO₂/N₂ and CO₂/N₂/O₂ flue gas compositions, and CNT-reinforced nanocomposite membranes performed better for the CO₂/O₂ flue gas blend. Internal corrosion in pipelines is the most critical factor for pipeline failure. The growing trend of mitigating internal corrosion in pipelines by using nanofiber polymer composite liners was investigated in this study. The liners were fabricated using the electrospun Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and graphite-doped PAN nanofibers. The liners were tested by immersing in water at 23 °C, 50 °C, and light oil to determine the diffusion characteristics. The absorption results combined with ATR-FTIR results confirmed that the addition of graphite-doped nanofibers has controlled the absorption significantly. Full article

In this paper, a method is presented in order to conduct data classification through the use of a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) Artificial Neural Network (ANN). At first, the performance of the K-means algorithm in relation to the classification of the data is analyzed completely. Then, the disadvantages and losses of this method are presented. By introducing the SOM ANN algorithm, the performance of the K-means algorithm with respect to data classification is modified. In fact, in this paper, the clustering performance of K-means is modified by the SOM ANN algorithm. For this aim, both algorithms are analyzed mathematically. Then, the problem results are compared in a simulation in MATLAB. The mentioned data are derived from 1000 patients with four different types of cancer. Each patient has two different symptoms. Four different cancers are shown as different clusters in here. The cancers are blood, intestine, salivary gland, and lung carcinoids. Symptoms are oxygen capacity of the lungs and red blood cell surface. The mentioned data were recorded by using a data acquisition system. The ANN network in this paper is based on the performance of an unsupervised learning problem. Full article

The purpose of this study is to examine whether there are complex interrelationships between supply chain collaboration, adoption of artificial intelligence, and the resulting risk management performance, with potential effects on organizational performance, supply chain performance, and supply chain flexibility. The data for this study were obtained from the answer questionnaires distributed in leading business and management universities in Karachi; out of 400 questionnaires disseminated, 384 were returned and filled with the responses. The data were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares–Structure Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. Among the six hypotheses tested in this particular study, it was revealed that none of the tested hypotheses were rejected at its level. These findings and recommendations gain more importance with the changing nature of the supply chain network and outlook toward sustainable practice. Full article

Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as one of the core components of Industry 4.0, which allows extreme customization of products and offers the full potential of design freedom. Recently, AM has been utilized to manufacture patient-specific, customized assistive devices in the field of rehabilitation. This work presents the design and development process of customized wrist-hand orthosis (WHO) elaborately using AM technology. The main focus of this research was to perform an experimental evaluation of the WHO devices for fitting and customer satisfaction. In this case, the primary anatomic measurement of the wrist was obtained using an infrared-based 3D scanner. Then a 3D model of the orthotic device was prepared in nTop using different lattice parameters. Finally, these devices were additively manufactured in liquid crystal display (LCD) 3D resin printers for superior surface quality. To maximize user comfort and mechanical robustness at the same time, mechanical tests were simulated to assess the WHO’s mechanical characteristics and confirm its operation during typical hand activities. This report applies Lean Six Sigma methodologies to dissect, document, assess, and improve the process for reporting safety incidents and mishaps in the United States Air Force (USAF). The current USAF policy requires supervisors to report all incidents through an unobstructed reporting channel without delay to ensure prompt investigation of hazardous practices, equipment, or situations. However, factors such as overwork, an overabundance of report forms, a dearth of education, and the normalization of complacency have stymied its effectiveness. This project employs the SIPOC diagram and DMAIC phase approach to analyze the USAF safety reporting process and recommends the steps supervisors need to take to maximize safety reporting. Some of the recommendations are establishing a primary avenue for making safety reports, implementing non-onerous feedback methods, and integrating modern technology to improve safety reporting efficiency and accuracy. This paper presents a bibliometric and network analysis of 6596 articles, published between 1977 and 2024, extracted from the Scopus database by using “Infrastructure AND Resilience” as the keyword. VOSviewer and Biblioshiny are used to generate analyses such as the co-authorship, co-occurrences, bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and Sankey diagram. This paper also emphasizes principles of infrastructure resilience such as flexibility, adaptability, agility, robustness, survivability, redundancy, and so on. Railway transport is the backbone of Canada’s supply chain, valued for its reliability and safety despite its inherent complexity, which brings a variety of associated risks. Considering Canada’s climate, analyzing weather-related risks in the railway network is valuable for decision-makers in transportation, especially in preparation for cold seasons and railway network development. In this study, a comprehensive spatial analysis using ArcMap was applied to identifying Saskatchewan’s hotspots and vulnerable geographical areas for the railway network in terms of minimum temperature, rain, and snow, which are the major weather-related risk factors in this province. Risk maps were generated for each factor mentioned, which demonstrate hotspots and hazardous areas that require more attention and planning to maintain the continuity of the supply chain. These results can be used to enhance safety, reduce service disruptions, and ensure the smooth operation of the railway network. Full article

The freight transportation system faces complex operations globally to meet customer demands. Intense competition prompts companies to enhance performance. Transportation modes (road, sea, air) impact service levels, each with distinct features, benefits, costs, environmental effects, and societal risks. Shippers confront challenges in mode selection due to numerous factors, compounded by an increase in low-volume, high-frequency shipments. Rising logistics costs for a few products of exporters affect the socio-economic situation of a country. This research introduces a hybrid approach for a shipment selection model, focusing on pharmaceutical drugs. Utilizing ma- chine learning algorithms (decision tree, Random Forest, logistic regression, XGboost, SVM) and multi-criteria decision-making methods (SAW, MARCOS, TOPSIS, MULTIMOORA, VIKOR), this study predicts the optimal shipping method (land, air, sea) based on dataset features (shipping cost, origin-destination, cargo weight, dimensions). Evaluation metrics include F1 score, Recall, Precision, and Accuracy score. XGboost stands out as the optimal algorithm, demonstrating an accuracy of eighty-four percent, with random forest, decision tree, SVM, and logistic regression following in descending order. This comprehensive approach addresses the complexities of pharmaceutical shipment selection, considering various influential factors. Full article

Harrow tine is a widely used tool for mechanical weeding. However, the effect of its geometry on its fatigue life is something that has not been studied well yet. In this work, two different harrow tines (0.5260” HT and 0.6253” HT) were analyzed to understand how their geometry affects their fatigue life under different field conditions and material properties. Finite element analyses were performed on these harrow tines by applying different degrees of leg deflections (3, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches) for von Mises stress distributions and failure life cycles. The results suggested that 0.526” HT has a longer cycle life than 0.6253” HT. With the largest leg deflection and controlled conditions, 0.5260” HT exhibits a harrowing capability of 133.62 hectares, which is larger than 0.6253” HT’s 117.66 hectares. Apart from the numerical analyses, prototypes (1:0.35 scaled-down model) of these harrow tines were additively manufactured using a rigid ultraviolet curable resin. Finally, a custom test setup was used to perform simple load-bearing tests of these harrow tines. Full article

This research explores the transformative realm of heat exchanger design, focusing on three different lattice types—gyroid, diamond, and SplitP. This study systematically investigates the impact of different cell sizes and wall thicknesses of the lattice structure on the performance of these innovative heat exchangers. The goal is to identify the design parameters of a high-performance heat exchanger with minimal fluid pressure loss but maximum heat transfer. Utilizing advanced computational simulations and modeling techniques, we delve into the intricate details of fluid dynamics within heat exchangers featuring distinct lattice geometries. By systematically adjusting lattice cell size and wall thickness, the research aims to identify the optimal configurations that maximize heat transfer efficiency while ensuring structural integrity. The analysis encompasses detailed examinations of fluid flow patterns, temperature changes, and pressure drops across the different lattice types. These complex heat exchangers were designed for additive manufacturing. The findings promise to guide the development of more efficient and customized heat exchangers, with implications for a wide range of applications where precise thermal management is paramount. This study investigates the impact of Industry 5.0 (I5.0) on the overall supply chain performance (SCP). Three dimensions of SCP, including efficiency, responsiveness, and visibility, have been defined based on the existing literature to evaluate the overall SCP. Moreover, seven enabling technologies of I5.0, which have the greatest impact on supply chain management (SCM), have been extracted from the existing literature. This study also demonstrates how I5.0 affects SCP dimensions and how each dimension contributes to overall SCP. The present work can provide managers and practitioners with a comprehensive perspective on the importance of I5.0 in improving their SCP by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of supply chain (SC) actions. The construction industry is shifting towards integration, digitization, and automation, necessitating an adaptive logistics system for enhanced performance. Despite this shift, poor supplier performance and lack of collaboration among stakeholders often cause delays and cost overruns. This research addresses these issues by proposing an optimization model for the planning phase of construction projects. The generalized mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed that optimizes supplier and process selection of construction projects, demonstrated through a numerical study. Results indicate that optimizing these decisions in the planning phase can significantly improve supply chain performance, enabling better cost and time management for construction projects traditional or modular. The past few decades have witnessed an enormous research growth in the field of natural language processing. In this regard, numerous machine learning (ML) algorithms have been applied in different sub-domains of NLP such as speech recognition, text classification, sentiment analysis, etc. Furthermore, their performances have been evaluated using diverse performance metrics. However, a comparative analysis of various ML algorithms in the aforementioned field is a feasible research area to explore. This may efficiently guide future research to precisely focus on the improvement of those particular algorithms that have been found to be more effective based on previous research. Thus, this article provides a comparative analysis regarding the application and effectiveness of different ML algorithms in the field of NLP. The Clean Energy Technology Research Institute (CETRI) at the University of Regina, Canada, serves as a collaborative hub where a dynamic team of researchers, industry leaders, innovators, and educators come together to tackle the urgent challenges of climate change and the advancement of clean energy technologies. Specializing in low-carbon and carbon-free clean energy research, CETRI adopts a unique approach that encompasses feasibility studies, bench-scale and pilot-plant testing, and pre-commercial demonstrations, all consolidated under one roof. This holistic model distinguishes CETRI, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for technical, scientific, and hands-on learning experiences. With a CAD 3.3 million pre-commercial carbon capture demonstration plant capable of capturing 1 tonne of CO₂ per day, and a feed-flexible hydrogen demonstration pilot plant producing 6 kg of hydrogen daily, CETRI emerges as a pivotal force in advancing innovative, reliable, and cost-competitive clean energy solutions, essential for a safe, prolific, and sustainable world. The conversion of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into valuable chemicals using sunlight is highly significant technologically and holds the promise of providing a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. To effectively utilize the abundant solar irradiation, it is essential to develop catalysts that can absorb a significant portion of the solar spectrum, particularly in the UV, visible, and infrared regions. Silicon nanowire arrays grown on silicon substrates meet this criterion, as they can absorb over 85% of solar irradiation and show minimal reflective losses across the UV, visible, and infrared portions of the solar spectrum. Herein, we report the deposition of various catalysts, including iron oxyhydroxides, copper, nickel, and ruthenium, on silicon nanowires using different catalyst deposition techniques. The photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide was evaluated using these catalysts. The results show that silicon nanowires coated with nickel and ruthenium oxide had the highest activity towards the photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide, with photomethanation rates reaching 546 μmolg_cat⁻¹h⁻¹ for RuO₂@SiNWs and 278 μmolg_cat⁻¹h⁻¹ for Ni/NiO@SiNWs. Continued improvement of photocatalysts using nanostructured silicon supports could enable the development of solar refineries for converting gas-phase CO₂ into value-added chemicals and fuels. Irrigation agriculture can contribute to international food security by improving agricultural yields. For irrigation projects with large pumping requirements, considerable energy input is required. With cost decreases, renewable energy is increasingly techno-economically viable but remains problematic due to intermittency. Using HOMER Pro Version 3.16.0 software, this study aims to quantify the viability of 100% renewable energy (RE) to support irrigation projects that permit capacity shortages. Evaluation includes the modelling of a hypothetical irrigation project, analysis of the efficacy of wind and solar, and the effect of capacity shortages. The study finds 100% RE systems with capacity shortages are more costly (CA$ 0.33/kWh) than current utility rates (CA$ 0.08–0.12/kWh). Full article

The combination of electronic and catalytic features, in conjunction with empirical investigation, provides enriched perspectives on the analysis of catalysts, thus propelling progress and design. This study employs computational methods to deduce electronic characteristics, including properties such as bandgap, Fermi energy, and magnetic moment, for known catalysts involved in the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction. Through the comparison of these attributes with existing experimental OCM data, the ability to forecast the effectiveness of catalysis and subsequent reaction results is achieved, spanning CH₄, C₂H₄, C₂H₆, and CO₂ production. Transition metals, including Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir, turn out to be promising catalyst promoters of OCM reactions. This study identified 58 innovative blends of metallic oxides and 3480 new catalytic configurations specifically designed for methane conversion at a moderately low temperature of 700 °C, placing them as effective catalysts for the OCM reaction. These emerging catalysts are projected to result in a rise in methane conversion extending from ±38.5% to ±95%, presenting a significant increase from the upper limit methane conversion of 36% reported in previous investigations. This study analyzed the operational environment of supply chains involved in the production of eco-friendly plastics, with a particular emphasis on small- and medium-sized businesses worldwide. Qualitative research methods were used to highlight the significance of extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations and strong recycling programs for the sustainability of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Also, this study looked at international regulations affecting the implementation of circular economy strategies and the difficulties in creating sustainable supply chains. It concluded that waste reduction, effective supply chain management, and sustainable practices are crucial aspects of a more effective and sustainable global plastic-manufacturing sector. This research highlighted the significance of government policies in SME revival and used Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to help SMEs adopt sustainable supply chain practices that act as a catalyst for industry reform. Nowadays, it is very important to secure our home perfectly. To make our life easier and more secure, we are presenting our smart door lock system project. We implement an IoT-based smart door lock system using an ESP32-CAM and an Android application in this project. Most of the time in our daily life, we forget to lock our doors and later we suffer from confusion about whether we locked all doors perfectly or not. In this project, we implement a smart door lock system, by which the owner can see the visitor’s picture and then lock or unlock their doors from anywhere and at any time using the Android application. Whenever visitors come to visit the home and press the doorbell, the owner will receive a notification on his/her smartphone and then the owner can see the visitor’s picture by using the Android app. After checking the visitor, the owner can let them enter the house by unlocking the door remotely. If the door is locked perfectly, then the door lock signal in the application will show a green signal. If the door is not locked perfectly, the signal will show red and then the owner can remotely lock their door easily from anywhere. In this project, we have also utilized a theft alert. If anyone comes in front of the door and tries to enter the house forcefully then a theft alert notification will be sent to the owner’s smartphone and a Buzzer Alert will ring in the house loudly so that the neighbors can be aware of the theft and can take action. This focused on the fabrication process for difficult-to-machine materials with the aim of advancing manufacturing technology using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). A multi-material axial-flow impeller with blades made of Inconel 718, a nickel-based alloy, and a hub made of SST 304, a general-purpose stainless steel, was developed using WAAM. Then, its industrial advantage was analyzed in terms of the machining time and tool usage required for fabrication. As a result of this study, it was found that for the axial-flow impeller with a tip diameter of 125.3 mm used in the study, a reduction in machining time of about 110 h and a reduction in tool usage of about 110 times could be expected. The conventional winding number method is extended in this research to characterize the nonlinear dynamical systems, especially in differentiating partially predictable chaos from strong chaos. On modern robotics’ challenges with increased degrees of freedom, traditional methods like the Lyapunov exponent are insufficient for distinguishing between strong and partially predictable chaos. The proposed methods examine the winding number’s sensitivity with respect to the center and its standard deviations across time sequences to assess predictability and differentiate between different motion types. The Duffing–Van der Pol system is used to show the effectiveness in identifying different chaotic behaviours, offering significant implications for the control of complex robotic systems. Electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming popular for short-distance urban transportation since they prioritize environmental sustainability. To enhance the rider’s safety in Alberta’s winter weather, this study entails incorporating real-time posture identification, tire pressure, and slip traction monitoring in e-scooters. This is achieved by deploying sensors from traction control and tire pressure monitoring systems into the rims of e-scooters. The suggested rim’s 3D CAD models, its whole manufacturing cycle, and a simulation-based production layout study are discussed in detail. The manufacturing process simulations reveal bottlenecks, followed by proposed optimizations exhibiting enhanced efficiency, and minimized waiting times. Full article

The need to adopt BIM and its usage to keep up with new construction trends has impacted construction works and made its activities much easier and more accurate. This has influenced construction industry professionals, prompting this study to evaluate BIM’s effects to establish its significance within the field. To gather data on the effects of BIM in the South African construction industry, structured questionnaires were administered to professionals in Gauteng province using a systematic random sampling method. Questionnaire data were analysed descriptively, applying a statistical equation to calculate a valid mean item score. Each item was ranked, and standard deviations along with Cronbach’s alpha were determined for reliability assessment. The results of this study indicated that the highest-ranked impacts of using BIM professionals in the construction industry were saving construction time, integrated design systems, accurate designs, construction risk management, reliable working procedures, and keeping track of past corrections. This study concludes that construction professionals’ institutions and bodies should continue training and retraining their members toward deriving BIM benefits for different construction activities. This study advocates that special attention should be given to supporting construction SMEs in adopting BIM technologies with relevant training, resources, and financial incentives from relevant government agencies. One promising approach to achieving sustainable energy while simultaneously addressing various environmental issues is to utilize solar-driven transformation of the greenhouse gas CO₂ into valuable chemical fuels. The main obstacle in achieving this goal has consistently been the identification of cost-effective, stable, and non-toxic photoactive materials that can efficiently convert CO₂ into chemical fuels. Photothermal catalysis offers a viable solution to address the challenges related to sunlight absorption and low quantum efficiency often encountered in conventional photocatalysts. In this study, we used a magnetite catalyst for the photothermal reduction of CO₂. Various characterization techniques, including PXRD, TEM, and XPS, were employed to confirm the catalyst phase, crystallinity, particle size, and the electronic structure of the magnetite catalyst. The results of the photothermal conversion of carbon dioxide revealed that carbon monoxide was the only product, with a selectivity of 100%. Furthermore, the Fe₃O₄ catalyst produced significantly higher CO under high-intensity illumination (2076 μmolgcat⁻¹h⁻¹) than in the dark (820 μmolgcat⁻¹h⁻¹) under the same temperature of 315 °C. The activation energy obtained for the tests conducted under high-intensity illumination was lower than that obtained in the dark. The use of photothermal catalysts such as Fe₃O₄ to drive useful chemical reactions such as CO₂ conversion to useful products contributes to advancing the field of sustainable energy and marks a significant stride toward realizing real solutions for mitigating climate change. Global warming is partly attributed to the off-gas from petrochemical plants. This can be utilized as a feed to produce hydrogen (H₂) as a promising measure for battling climate change. In this study, we evaluated the potential for converting waste off-gas to H₂ via steam-reforming technology accompanied by a carbon capture unit, through hybrid absorption/adsorption processes, to achieve a 99.99% hydrogen product. Also, the ReCiPe methodology was used for environmental analysis. The results showed that the equivalent greenhouse emissions when producing of 1 kg of H₂ were 3.53 kg CO₂-Eq, which were almost 2.5 times lower than those for H₂ production without carbon capture, i.e., grey H₂. Also, it was shown that using refinery gas as a reforming furnace fuel instead of conventional fuel oil led to about an 11% decrease in emissions. Full article

In Saskatchewan, irrigation requires a large electrical input, and within the current electrical utility landscape, any new demand exacerbates the use of fossil fuels. With cost decreases, renewable energy is increasingly techno-economically viable. Using HOMER Pro software (Version 3.16.0), this study aims to quantify the viability of renewable energy to support irrigation projects. The evaluation includes the modelling of the three following scenarios: conventional, optimized and 100% renewable. Further, sensitivity has been considered for utility rates, grid interaction and carbon pricing. The lowest cost systems propose the inclusion of some renewable energy. Depending on the system architecture, the analyzed energy systems can be as low as $0.02/kWh or as high as $1.12/kWh. The efficacy of renewable integration is particularly dependent on the sensitivity surrounding grid interaction. Full article

With decreases in cost accompanying advances in technology, renewable energy is becoming increasingly viable. Much software is available for the techno-economic analysis of energy systems, and HOMER Pro software is frequently applied for micro-grid and industrial analysis. Around the globe, techno-economic analyses of a variety of renewable energy systems have been undertaken using HOMER Pro Version 3.16.0. This study reviews the primary techno-economic findings of past research to investigate recent trends. Based on high-level trendline analysis, it appears that the costs of renewable energy systems have decreased in academic HOMER Pro-based literature. Of the articles analyzed, the LCOEs for 100% renewable energy systems have decreased from $0.91/kWh to $0.70/kWh, while the LCOEs for 0% renewable energy systems have increased from $0.74/kWh to $0.78/kWh. Renewable ethanol serves as a compelling source for generating clean hydrogen. In this study, we conducted an in-depth exploration of the catalytic steam reforming of ethanol to produce hydrogen employing four commercial catalysts under optimized reaction conditions, including temperature, pressure, and the steam-to-ethanol ratio. Among the catalysts investigated, two nickel-based catalysts with different nickel contents a exhibited superior performance, displaying the highest hydrogen yield, ethanol conversion, and hydrogen selectivity. Notably, these nickel-based commercial catalysts achieved a hydrogen selectivity of 75%, a hydrogen yield of 89%, and an ethanol conversion rate of 100%. Full article

This paper investigates active thermography models for non-destructive testing of composites, with a focus on continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer (CCFRTP) components, in order to detect flaws such as porosity and delamination. The application of finite elements in this study with a numerical model of thermography focuses on collecting data, with critical points verified and validated by an experimental model. The study aims to understand the influence of different, independent parameters on the active thermography test, making it possible to develop optimized models. The numerical solution is close to the experimental results, indicating the potential to refine future experimental configurations. Full article

The co-production of CO₂ continues to remain the bane of several hydrogen production technologies, including the steam reforming of methane and the dry reforming of methane processes. Efficient utilization of abundant greenhouse gas in the form of methane provides opportunities for the design of an innovative system that will maximize the use of such a raw material in the most environmentally friendly manner. The study of the mechanism of the pyrolysis of methane reactions over molten metals provides promise for improved hydrogen yield and methane conversion with a greater turnover frequency. Catalyst electronic properties computed via Density Functional Theory using the Quantum Espresso code provided data that were built into a database. Using Bismuth as the base metal, active transition metals including Ni, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ag, and Au of different concentrations of 5, 10, 15, and 25% were placed on 96 atoms of the base metal and relaxed to obtain the optimized geometric structures for the catalytic reaction studies. The kinetics of the individual elementary steps of the pyrolysis reaction at preset temperatures over the bi-metals were calculated using the Car-Parinello (CP) method and Nudge Elastic Band (NEB) computations. The collated data of the various pyrolysis of methane reactions over the different bi-metals was used to train machine learning models for the prediction of reaction outcome, catalytic performance, and efficient operating conditions for the pyrolysis of methane over molten metals. The turnover frequency, which is determined using the transition state energies of the fundamental reaction cycles, will be used to simulate the stability of the catalyst. Full article

We will continue to rely on fossil fuel energy generation for at least this century. Reducing our carbon footprint is vital for the welfare of our environment and human health. The province we live in, Saskatchewan, is the second-highest emitter of CO₂ in Canada. This is primarily due to our reliance on coal-fired power plants for electricity. The Boundary Dam power plant in Estevan, SK, is the first-ever commercial power plant equipped with CCS technology. The current CCS process is highly efficient in capturing its carbon dioxide emissions and storing them underground. As with any first-of-its-kind project, numerous operational challenges have occurred that have affected the capture plant availability and, in turn, resulted in reduced efficiency of the plant. One of the major concerns is fly ash accumulation on plant equipment, which causes outages and the accumulation of fly ash in the amine-based absorbent that is utilized for capturing CO₂. This is primarily due to the transfer of PMs in the fly ash from pre-conditioning to downstream equipment. This study identified three alternatives to address PM accumulation and improve the operation of the capture facility: using a water and oil column, a hybrid electrostatic precipitator, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filters. Biofuels are a clean source of energy and they are produced from cheap and renewable sources such as lignocellulose biomass. Lignocellulose biomass composition and structure affect its hydrolysis to fermentable sugars. This is due to the cellulose crystallinity and the presence of non-hydrolyzed lignin. As a result, the obtained biofuels are of a low yield. A pretreatment step can be added before the hydrolysis to delignify and decrease the crystallinity of lignocellulose biomass. Pulsed electric field was found to increase the permeability of plants tissues. In this study, flax straw was pretreated using pulsed electric field and the yields of glucose, cellobiose, and xylose, with respect to untreated flax straw, from the hydrolysis increased by 25%, 67%, and 12%respectively. The fusion of catalytic and electronic properties, coupled with empirical data, provides enriched perspectives into catalyst evaluation and design, thus propelling advancement and innovation in the domain of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, including the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction. Comparative assessment of various machine learning methodologies on OCM reaction datasets reveals that the Random Forest regression (RFR) model excels in C₂H₄ and C₂H₆ combined yield (C₂y) predictive accuracy, boasting an average R² value of 0.98. The hierarchy of modeling performance stands as follows: RFR > XGBR > SVR > DNN. The MSE and MAE metrics of the RFR models were observed to be lower compared to alternative models, ranging from 0.12 to 9.03 for MSE and 0.21 to 2.02 for MAE. Model accuracy follows the order of C₂H₆y > C₂H₄y > C₂y > CO₂y > CH₄_conv (methane conversion). When examining the influence of model features, C₂y increases proportionally with an augmentation in dataset attributes, including the quantity of alkali/alkali-earth metal moles in the catalyst (13.69%), the atomic number (6.24%) of the catalyst promoter, and the Fermi energy of the metal, with a less pronounced impact compared to the case of temperature (33.70%). This suggests a highly nonlinear correlation between combined ethylene and ethane yield and temperature. Other factors, such as the bandgap of the active metal oxide and the support, as well as the Fermi energy of the catalyst support, were observed to have a relatively modest effect on the predictive models for combined ethylene and ethane yield and methane conversion. As amine-based post-combustion capture is adopted in numerous projects, aligning projected equipment performance with the operational requirements of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities is imperative. This study highlights the methodology in using data from the operation of an amine-based CCS facility to provide essential Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) parameters for some key equipment including a Booster Fan, Compressor, and Lean–rich heat exchanger. The performance of the equipment was evaluated using key indicators such as the mean time between failures and mean time to repair. The analysis shows the need to combine different data sources within the plant to identify opportunistic maintenance and critical failure points to assess equipment reliability. These findings can be used as a tool for maintaining operational efficiency in future CCS plants, empowering decision-makers to identify bottlenecks and make informed equipment redundancy decisions. An important contributor to environmental degradation is the industrial revolution, which has occurred in developed and developing nations. The present investigation aimed to tackle the escalating apprehensions regarding the discharge of various types of dyes from the paint, textile, and dyeing sectors. This research focuses on the adsorption performance of a newly developed system that uses cotton pod shell powder (CPSP) as a novel adsorbent to remove dye industry wastewater. The system has been designed, manufactured, and tested to be operationally efficient and cost-effective. The CPSP is a new adsorbent with desirable properties such as favorable functional groups and porosity, and analysis of its functional groups and porous nature was carried out using FTIR and SEM. The experimental data from the developed system showed that inlet dye concentration (50, 100, and 150 ppm), bed height (10, 20, and 30 cm), and flow rate (10, 15, and 20 mL/min) significantly affect the adsorption of dye industry wastewater by CPSP. Breakthrough curves were shown to be flow rate and bed depth dependent, according to the data. Significant experimentation was conducted on the developed system, and under optimized conditions. It was shown that the breakthrough point was affected by both bed height and flow rate. Evidence suggested that decreasing flow rate and concentration and raising bed height led to improved breakthrough and exhaustion times. At a concentration of 100 ppm and a flow rate of 15 mL/min, a bed depth of 20 cm was found to have the highest absorption capacity. Adam-Bohart, bed depth service time, and Yoon-Nelson models were utilized to examine the adsorption data. The results revealed that the developed system is effective, and the data obtained in this work can provide optimum operating conditions, suggesting its scalability to an industrial level for dye removal from wastewater by adsorption using CPSP as a novel adsorbent. While there has been significant research and progress in the field of sustainable supply chain management, there are still some areas that require further attention and exploration. In this paper, we particularly focus on the social aspect of sustainability and present an examination of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) within the context of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Regarding the methodology, we adopted a three-step approach involving digital literature aggregation, in-depth filtering, and comprehensive data analysis that identifies and analyzes the social dimensions of the SDGs, such as inequality, health, education, and community development. This paper makes a novel contribution by aligning SCM with the social pillars of the SDGs, underscoring their importance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which makes this study unique. Reducing CO₂ emission from fossil fuels is crucial for the global aim of constraining greenhouse gas release into the atmosphere and the consequent adverse impact of the rising global temperature. One prominent approach for reducing the CO₂ influx concerns capturing and storing CO₂ in subterranean reservoirs. The properties of deep subsurface reservoirs that are appropriate for storing gasses require extensive scrutiny, including (i) the assessment of their reservoir characteristics, (ii) examinations of the nature of the caprock, and (iii) continuous monitoring of the movement of injected gas plumes. The sedimentary strata of Saskatchewan contains a number of reservoirs that are potentially good for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The Late Ordovician Winnipeg Formation in Southern Saskatchewan constitutes a lower highly porous sandstone unit of the Black Island Member. Volumetric calculations of the Storage Space Capacity Potential of the sandstone indicate a subterraneous 974 km³ pore space. The porous sandstone unit is capped by a shale unit (Icebox Member). Thus, juxtaposition of these two lithologies makes the formation an excellent candidate for CCS. Full article

This paper assesses a system that uses only solar energy to synthesize liquid hydrogen and ammonia as energy carriers. Photovoltaic modules deliver electrical power, while parabolic dish collectors are responsible for directing thermal energy to the solid oxide electrolyzer for hydrogen production, which then mixes with nitrogen to produce ammonia after a number of compression stages. To investigate the proposed system, comprehensive thermodynamic and exergo-economic studies are performed using an engineering equation solver and ASPEN PLUS software. Full article

An experiment examined the impact of 0.2% to 1.0% w/w graphite nanoparticles in 15W40 lubricating oil on tribological and rheological behavior. The analysis, conducted with a Pin on Disc machine and Four-Ball tester, revealed improved tribological properties and a 30% reduction in the friction coefficient compared to fresh 15W40. Wear was negligible, and extreme pressure performance increased by approximately 20%. The pulp and paper industry is one of the leading waste-generating industries globally. With the rich energy content of these wastes and many of these mills not paying attention/implementing efficient waste disposal methods, it has become imperative that research efforts on pulp and paper waste valorization be performed; hence this paper. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) technology was adopted due to its ability to transform wet biomass into biocrude. The research studied the effects of reaction parameters such as temperature, residence time, feed concentration, and catalysts on the yield of biocrude. While central composite design (CCD) was used in the design of the experiments, response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized for their optimization. The optimum parametric conditions obtained were the following: temperature: 340 °C; residence time: 56min; and feed concentration: 5%. Zeolite (HZSM-5), gamma-alumina (γ-Al₂O₃), and activated carbon were utilized as catalysts, and their performances with respect to biocrude yield improvement were evaluated. The order of catalytic effect on the biocrude yield was γ-Al₂O₃ (25.65%) > HZSM-5 (23.18%) > activated carbon (21.94%). Catalyst characterization was performed on the fresh and spent catalysts to study their properties and to make informed inferences on their impacts on biocrude yield. Based on the findings from this research, necessary conclusions and recommendations for future work are presented. Full article

This study investigates the fabrication of sustainable polymer-based floor tiles utilizing recycled high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. The process incorporates rice husk ash and natural sand to create eco-friendly construction materials. The materials underwent assessment for density, water absorption, flexural strength, compressive strength, and abrasive wear. The results reveal a density range from 1.07051 to 1.6151 g/cm³, and water absorption ranging between 0.1996% and 0.68434%. Optimal flexural and compressive strengths were observed for HD70R15S1 and PET70R15S15, reaching 5.96 and 24.7933 MPa, respectively. Three-body abrasive wear testing indicates a minimum of 0.03095 cm³ for PET70R15S15 and a maximum of 0.17896 cm³ for HD70R15S15 composites. Full article

This study explores the use of Polypropylene (PP) as a cost-effective matrix in composite materials, employing marble dust (MD) as a readily available filler. PP’s affordability and suitable strength make it ideal for various applications. MD, composed of CaCO₃, alumina, and silica, enhances mechanical strength and is commonly used in construction applications like concrete. Composite specimens were fabricated using the injection molding technique, and their mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and compressive strength) were analyzed following ASTM standards. Tribological properties were assessed through a pin-on-disc apparatus with varying MD proportions. SEM and EDS analyses visually inspected the fracture types and filler distribution in the composites. Full article

Foam–CO₂ EOR Flooding is not very successful if unaccompanied by foam stabilizers such as nanoparticle fly ash (NFA). This study was conducted to determine the effect of NFA on foam stability by considering particle characteristics using the Bulk Foam Method as an additional condition. The test resulted in half-life times, which showed that in the absence of NFA, when oil was added, it was 211.5 s, and in salinity conditions, it was 232.5 s. This succeeds in improving half-life times to 226 s (with oil) and 241.5 s (with salinity) by adding NFA-Type F. For further research, conducting tests using reservoir conditions is recommended. An experiment examined the impact of 0.2% to 1.0% w/w graphite nanoparticles in 15W40 lubricating oil on tribological and rheological behaviour. Analysis, conducted with a pin-on-disc machine and four-ball tester, revealed improved tribological properties and a 30% reduction in friction coefficient compared to fresh 15W40. Wear was negligible, and extreme-pressure performance increased by approximately 20%. SEM morphology confirmed the presence of graphite nanoparticles on the tribo-pair surface, indicating enhanced lubricant performance. Full article

This study examines the impact of synthesized silica nanofluid on wettability and interfacial tension in sandstone reservoirs to enhance oil recovery. The parameters of the nanofluid are assessed using methods such as a DLS Zetasizer, contact angle measurements, and tensiometer. Preliminary findings indicate stable nanoparticle distribution and further results show significant wettability alterations and reduced interfacial tension, suggesting the nanofluid’s potential in optimizing fluid–rock interactions for enhanced oil recovery. This study highlights the potential of nanotechnology in the petroleum industry, provides a new understanding of fluid behavior in porous media, and increases the understanding of nanofluid-enhanced reservoir engineering.
