Cover Story: Air polishing with erythritol powder is thought to remove biofilm in periodontal pockets up to 9 mm in depth. This ex vivo study used scanning microscopy to evaluate specimens treated for various lengths of time. Even with the limitations of a “bench top” design, the results indicate that air polishing has minimal impact on bacteria embedded in calculus and imply that air polishing with erythritol powder is, at best, an adjunct to scaling and root planing. To achieve the traditional clinical endpoints of successful periodontal therapy, definitive scaling and root planing are still required. Periodontitis is extraordinarily complex, and when we try to outsmart the disease with clever instrumentation, the disease often persists but at a lower level of progression. View this paper
