Cover Story: Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase I (TPPI) has multiple roles in Arabidopsis physiology. Loss of TPPI delays flowering and reduces key flowering gene expression. TPPI deficiency alters nitrogen responses, with stronger anthocyanin accumulation under nitrogen starvation and enhanced induction of nitrate assimilation and transport genes after nitrate resupply. Notably, tppi mutants show lower total nitrate reductase activity but a higher activation state. They also show altered chlorophyll accumulation, increased energy dissipation, and PSI acceptor-side limitation. Previously reported decreases in T6P in tppi mutants are counterintuitive for loss of a T6P phosphatase. A kinetic model explores whether TPPI activity and compensation by other TPP isoforms could account for this response. View this paper
