Cover Story: Groundwater quality assessment during well drilling could be biased by transient contamination from drilling equipment and fluids. A key challenge is distinguishing natural background chemistry from drilling-induced contaminants, especially as standard filtration often fails to isolate colloidal elements during aquifer testing. This study addresses these issues by (i) quantifying leaching of inorganic contaminants from drilling rods and muds, (ii) testing stepwise filtration to remove colloidal-associated metals, and (iii) comparing lab results with field data. Such an approach improves the accuracy of groundwater quality assessments during well development. View this paper
