Cover Story: Carboxy-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids hold immense promise for CO2 capture and biomolecule stabilization, yet their extreme viscosity often renders them experimentally inaccessible. This study overcomes this “experimental gap” through an integrated computational strategy. By combining DFT, SAPT2 energy decomposition, and machine learning, the authors reveal that electrostatic interactions are the primary drivers of viscosity. A machine learning model predicts densities with remarkable accuracy, enabling property estimation where measurements fail. This predictive framework guides the rational design of new IL candidates with tailored properties, transforming a characterization bottleneck into a roadmap for functionalized ionic liquid development. View this paper
