Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Energetic materials (EMs), including explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics, are substances designed to release energy rapidly through chemical reactions, with applications spanning defense, aerospace, and industrial sectors. The performance of EMs is governed by intricate structure–property relationships, which dictate critical characteristics such as energy density, detonation performance, stability, and sensitivity. Structural characteristics at the micro and mesoscale, including molecular structure, intermolecular interactions, crystal structure, crystal morphology, and the micro-nanostructure of particles, exert varying degrees of influence on the properties of different EMs. The emergence of new material types, distinct from single-molecule crystals, such as energetic cocrystals; energetic MOFs; energetic metal complexes and energetic composites, has brought extraordinary properties to EMs. Understanding the structure–property relationships is essential for advancing both fundamental science and practical applications of EMs. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Energetic molecules;
  • Crystal structures and morphologies;
  • Nano/micro structures;
  • Energetic cocrystals;
  • Energetic MOFs and energetic metal complexes;
  • Energetic composites;
  • Thermal stability;
  • Sensitivity and detonation performance.

We invite scientists working in a range of experimental and theoretical fields to contribute their work to this Special Issue in order to provide a deeper insight into the structure–property relationships in energetic materials and the development of new energetic materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
