Cover Story: What are the conceptual foundations of thermodynamics? Mathematicians have explored this question through abstract axiomatic systems, while contemporary physicists (inspired by Maxwell's demon) have come to regard information as the key basis for the theory. Each approach offers insights. To embrace both, we need axioms that incorporate ideas of information from the outset, describing how physical agents represent and manipulate the state of their surroundings—and themselves.
