Cover Story: This research investigates how urban design interventions can mitigate heat stress for vulnerable older populations in Porto, Portugal. Using ENVI-met microclimate simulations, the authors compare existing urban configurations with tested scenarios featuring green infrastructure, artificial shading, and pavement materials. Findings reveal that older adults consistently experience higher levels of thermal discomfort compared to younger adults, necessitating age-inclusive planning. Results indicate that while vegetation-based strategies are the most effective for heat mitigation, the success of reflective materials depends heavily on local urban morphology, providing a methodological framework for city planners to create more resilient and comfortable public spaces in a warming world. View this paper
