Cover Story: Biomining exploits the potential of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction and recovery of metals from a wide range of waste materials as an appealing alternative, replacing primary raw materials with secondary material resources (thus improving metal recycling rates in the context of the circular economy). Despite encouraging results, the use of biomining for the recovery of metals is limited to laboratory scale applications. Recently, special attention has been paid to the analysis of metal biomining from a process sustainability perspective by using several supporting tools (e.g., life cycle assessment, LCA). The purpose of LCA applications is to establish the potential for a large-scale implementation of the process in question and its possible impacts on the environment. View this paper
