Cover Story: Psychiatric self-admission challenges traditional assumptions about who should decide when inpatient care is needed and how it is provided. By transferring aspects of decision-making power to patients, self-admission aims to strengthen autonomy and responsibility in managing one's own health and life. Drawing on stakeholder perspectives from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, this study found contrasting views of power-transfer during implementation of self-admission. Self-admission was regarded as a responsive and responsible approach that compensates for gaps in mental healthcare. However, stakeholders also expressed concerns regarding safety, responsibility, and loss of professional control. The findings highlight the importance of trust and shared understanding when implementing patient-centred approaches in psychiatric care. View this paper
