Cover Story: This study compares hydrogen fuel cells and combustion systems for medium- to long-range commercial aircraft for more sustainable aviation by 2050 featuring advanced airframe and propulsion technologies. Aircraft performance benefits include the effects of such technologies as laminar flow control, new load alleviation techniques, new materials, ultra-high bypass ratio engines, superconducting motors, and improved fuel cell systems. Results show fuel cell aircraft have 30% higher operating costs and 22–30% greater fuel consumption than combustion systems but offer up to 24% lower in-flight emissions for long-range flights. The study highlights the need for significant technological advancements and green hydrogen production to enable sustainable aviation solutions for such aircraft. View this paper
