Cover Story: The Thoroughbred is the ultimate equine athlete, with hooves that support galloping forces at racing speeds. At birth, each hoof is mediolaterally symmetrical. Reshaping of the neonatal hoof to form the mature hoof begins as soon as the hoof comes into contact with the ground. In the first year of life, the hooves change shape, grow, thicken, compress, change their angle and structure. In healthy foals, uneven mediolateral loading in standing can stimulate changes that produce the typical asymmetric hooves seen in mature Thoroughbreds. Flexural deformity in foals leads to greater dorsal loading, potentially impacting hoof growth. Early identification and treatment is beneficial for these foals. View this paper
