Cover Story: Foot orthoses are vital for managing neuropathic conditions, yet traditional materials often lack dynamic adaptability. This study explores the preliminary technical feasibility of integrating auxetic foams—materials with a negative Poisson’s ratio that expand when stretched—into orthotic designs to enhance pressure distribution. Based on this small-scale pilot observation, the initial trends in vertical ground reaction force suggest that auxetic-integrated orthoses offer a promising concept for patient care. These early findings establish a foundational baseline for expansive future clinical trials to fully validate the material's efficacy across diverse neuropathic etiologies. View this paper
