Cover Story: Wood was the second material to be considered for building. In addition to its good technical properties, people quickly recognized that it has esthetic value as well. These properties stood out even more since tropical tree species, wood with different structure, coloring, and diverse annual circles, started to be used. In order to ensure a safe application of tropical wood in buildings, it is necessary to get acquainted with the properties of tropical tree species related to fire protection. Some of the accompanying (accessory) substances in tropical wood accelerate its ignition and complicate the extinguishing process. Moreover, the application of a fire retardant onto the surface of tropical tree species and its fixation is not standard compared to central European tree species. This this article focuses on the relation between fire retardants and the selected tropical tree species. View this paper
