Cover Story: Difficulties in characterizing nanomaterials as nanoparticles extend beyond the definition of a single size threshold. Determining the accurate size of nanoparticles is challenging. This work describes the unexpected consequence of measurement protocols, called operational aspects, on the size of nanoparticles. The cover figure presents two challenges: the denaturation of nanoparticles of silver during atomic force microscopy imaging and the presence of non-homogeneous populations of PVP-coated silver nanoparticles observed by transmission electron microscopy. Other artefacts and limitations in biophysical techniques are described in the article, and practical suggestions are compiled in the supplementary materials. View this paper.
