Cover Story: Sport participation provides important health and well-being benefits, yet many athletes consider quitting. While previous research has mainly focused on athletes' individual motivations, this study examines how the motivational climate created by coaches and teammates relates to dropout intentions. Using data from 268 athletes and 50 coaches, we found that athletes' own motivation remains the strongest predictor of dropout intentions. However, peer dynamics also mattered: athletes were less likely to consider quitting when their motivational profile aligned with that of their teammates. These findings highlight the importance of the broader social environment in understanding sport retention. View this paper
