Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As digital technologies continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace, the ways in which consumers search for information, make decisions, and interact with brands have been fundamentally transformed. The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI), social media platforms, mobile ecosystems, and immersive digital environments has reshaped the consumer journey, making it more dynamic, personalized, and interconnected than ever before (Audrezet et al., 2025; Pauketat & Anthis, 2022). While these advancements offer enhanced convenience and tailored experiences, they also introduce new complexities in understanding consumer behavior across increasingly fragmented and technology-mediated contexts.

Although prior research has extensively examined traditional consumer decision-making processes and digital marketing strategies (Lamberton & Stephen, 2016), there remains a critical need to deepen our understanding of how consumers think, feel, and behave in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. In particular, emerging technologies are not only influencing what consumers choose but also how they form preferences, develop trust, manage privacy concerns, and engage with digital agents such as algorithms, virtual influencers, and AI-driven recommendation systems (Ryoo et al., 2024; Zhu et al., 2025). These shifts call for a more nuanced and integrative perspective that captures the psychological, social, and contextual dimensions of consumer behavior in the digital age.

This Special Issue of Behavioral Sciences invites contributions that explore the multifaceted nature of consumer behavior in digitally mediated environments. Our goal is to advance theoretical and empirical understanding of how consumers adapt to, interact with, and are influenced by digital technologies across various contexts. We welcome original research, theoretical developments, empirical investigations, methodological innovations, and interdisciplinary perspectives that aim to advance the understanding of consumer consumption behavior in the digital era.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Trust, transparency, and perceived fairness in digital platforms and automated systems;
  • Consumer experiences in immersive environments such as the metaverse, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR);
  • Consumer responses to personalization, recommendation systems, and targeted advertising;
  • Privacy concerns, data disclosure, and digital self-presentation;
  • The influence of social media, virtual influencers, and online communities on consumer attitudes and behavior;
  • Cross-cultural differences in digital consumption and technology adoption;
  • Ethical considerations and behavioral responses to digital manipulation, misinformation, and algorithmic bias.

We encourage submissions that provide both rigorous theoretical insights and meaningful practical implications, contributing to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior in the digital age.

Against the background of AI penetration in C2C second-hand commerce, AI chatbots have emerged as vital operational tools for individual sellers. Prior technology adoption literature predominantly emphasizes positive acceptance drivers yet overlooks the simultaneous existence of benefit and risk perceptions, and cannot fully explain individual sellers’ paradoxical adoption intentions. This study integrates the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Technology Threat Avoidance Theory (TTAT) to construct an integrated dual mediation model, adopting perceived effortlessness and perceived risk as parallel mediators. Online questionnaire surveys were distributed to individual sellers operating on Chinese C2C second-hand trading platforms. After screening and data cleaning, a final valid sample of 261 respondents was retained. Partial least-squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to empirically test the proposed research model. The results demonstrate that personal factors (perceived busyness, desire for control, AI acceptance) and situational factors (product standardization, social influence, platform safeguards) jointly shape individual sellers’ dual perceptions. These antecedents exert differentiated impacts on the two mediating constructs, which subsequently predict individual sellers’ intentions to adopt AI chatbots. This research clarifies the balancing mechanism of positive and negative perceptions in technology decision-making. The framework reconciles conflicting psychological evaluations of intelligent systems, deepens the understanding of paradoxical adoption behaviors, and offers practical implications for optimizing intelligent services within C2C second-hand ecosystems. Meme-Based Packaging as Digital Cultural Translation: How Online Cultural Symbols Shape Purchase and Sharing Intentions

Internet memes increasingly move from social media into physical product packaging, yet little is known about how consumers respond when online cultural symbols become package design cues. Drawing on the Stimulus–Organism–Response framework, this study examines how meme-based packaging shapes purchase intention and sharing intention through perceived value, brand warmth, and cultural resonance. A between-subjects survey experiment was conducted with 305 Chinese adult consumers, who evaluated either a meme-based packaging stimulus or a no-explicit-meme conventional packaging control stimulus. Partial least squares structural equation modeling showed that purchase intention and sharing intention followed different dominant mechanisms. Perceived value was the strongest predictor of purchase intention, whereas cultural resonance was the strongest predictor of sharing intention. Visual attractiveness most strongly enhanced perceived value, while playfulness and expression–product fit contributed more clearly to brand warmth and cultural resonance. Mediation results further showed that brand warmth and cultural resonance consistently transmitted the effects of meme-packaging cues, whereas the value route was more selective. These findings show how online cultural symbols can continue to shape consumer evaluation and social transmission after entering physical product interfaces. Full article
