Cover Story: Serum protein levels serve as early indicators of diseases. However, protein detection in serum using biomarker-specific methods remains challenging due to low target protein abundance and interference from highly abundant background proteins. A 'chemical nose' sensing platform was developed that leverages tunable multivalent interactions of polymers. A set of five fluorescent polymers with different side-chain functional groups generate distinct response patterns. These differential responses can be characterized using pattern recognition analysis to provide sensitive detection of protein composition changes. This sensor platform demonstrates strong potential for applications requiring protein detection in complex biological fluids including serum. View this paper
