Cover Story: Berveglieri and co-workers report a low-cost technique that uses vertical optical scanning with a fisheye camera to produce dense point clouds in forest plots. From some constraints on the camera positions in the bundle adjustment, tree trunks can be accurately reconstructed and mapped in a local reference system. The quality of the generated measurements is comparable to point clouds obtained by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), resulting in an average difference of less than 1 cm when reconstructing trunks.
