Since the 19th century, Protestant missionaries in Guangdong have extensively engaged in the translation and publication of religious texts, employing localized strategies in the illustration of Christian novels. Within the local cultural context of late Qing Guangdong, missionaries collaborated with local scholars, used Cantonese for writing, and designed novel illustrations to overcome barriers in doctrinal dissemination, thereby facilitating the spread of Christianity. The illustrations in missionary-published novels, such as The Pilgrim’s Progress in Vernacular and The Spiritual Warfare in Vernacular, adopted the stylistic features of Ming and Qing novel woodcuts in terms of lines, composition, character attire, and settings. Furthermore, they skillfully incorporated the Confucian moral framework of loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness, as represented in the Sacred Edict, into their narrative ethics, while integrating elements such as Buddhist causality and Daoist imagery into a “didactic” system. This localization strategy, combined with a “trinity” reading guidance model comprising images, text, and biblical annotations, visually elucidated the tenets of the Bible and encouraged the public to embrace Christianity. The localized practice of missionary novel illustrations served as a conscious and effective visual strategy aimed at bridging cultural divides and promoting the dissemination of the Gospel. It profoundly reflects the visual agency in modern Sino–Western cultural exchanges and significantly advanced the propagation of Christianity. Full article

The scholastic tradition is often criticized for starting from abstract principles or philosophical definitions. In this way, scholastic theology is frequently contrasted with post-conciliar theology, which is developed on the basis of the Paschal event, understood as the hermeneutical criterion for the whole of theology. Karl Rahner accuses Thomas Aquinas of “isolating” the Trinity from other areas of theology, such as soteriology, anthropology, moral theology, and spirituality. He also criticizes Aquinas for separating Christology from the Trinity, arguing that in the Thomistic account of the Incarnation it is not essential that the Son becomes incarnate, since any divine Person could, in principle, have done so. Rahner contends that this doctrine weakens the connection between God’s inner Trinitarian life and the missions. Consequently, our adoption as children of God would no longer be grounded in the Son’s own sonship, and what God reveals of himself in history would not truly express who he is as the Triune God. The purpose of this article is to show that such criticisms do not accurately represent Thomistic teaching and to present the doctrine of our divine filiation within a Trinitarian Christological framework. It will first examine the relationship between the immanent Trinity and the economic Trinity, then present the Thomistic doctrine of the divine missions and processions. Finally, it will address the role of the Holy Spirit and our adoptive divine filiation, all considered from a Thomistic perspective. Alongside the Summa theologiae, particular attention will be paid to Aquinas’s biblical commentaries, where he focuses on the Trinitarian economy and its implications for salvation, drawn directly from his reading of Scripture. This paper argues that Catholic Education needs to be based on the foundation of Trinitarian theological anthropology. It explains where this fits within the architectonic framework of Catholic systematic theology. Trinitarian theological anthropology is the work of the theological virtues (faith, hope and love), operating upon faculties of the soul (intellect, memory and will) in pursuit of the transcendental properties of being (truth, beauty and goodness). Through the operation of these virtues a person is brought into a relationship with the Holy Trinity. A consideration of these fundamental elements of Catholic systematic theology and their place in Catholic Education is offered as a contribution to the celebrations of the Jubilee Year of 2025, with its title “Pilgrims of Hope”. Intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation is a complex and multifactorial condition with a challenging diagnosis and limited therapeutic options, highlighting the need for reliable biomarkers to improve clinical decision-making. The aim of this study was to identify circulating prognostic biomarkers of IVD herniation regression. The plasma proteomic profile and the expression of circulating non-coding RNAs were analysed in a rat model of IVD herniation and were correlated with herniation size. Four candidate proteins (TNC, COPS3, JUP, and GNAI2) were significantly correlated with herniation size, with TNC further validated by ELISA. Additionally, miR-143-3p, miR-10b-5p, miR-27a-3p, miR-140-5p, miR-155-5p, miR-146a-5p, and miR-21-5p were positively correlated with herniation size. Moreover, TNC, COPS3, JUP, and GNAI2 were found to be potential targets of miR-155-5p. This study provides the first combined proteomic and miRNA account of preclinical plasma biomarkers of IVD herniation size, where TNC-miR-155-5p emerge as promising elements of a regulatory module with IVD herniation prognostic potential. The color and scent of flowers are vital ornamental attributes influenced by a complex interaction of metabolic and transcriptional mechanisms. Comparative analyses were performed to determine the molecular rationale for these features in Hydrangea arborescens, between the white-flowered variety ‘Annabelle’ (An) and its pink-flowered variant ‘Pink Annabelle’ (PA). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) detected 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ‘An’ and 21 in ‘PA’, with 18 chemicals common to both types. ‘An’ exhibited somewhat higher VOC diversity, whereas ‘PA’ emitted much bigger quantities of benzenoid and phenylpropanoid volatiles, including benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, and phenylethyl alcohol, resulting in a more pronounced floral scent. UPLC–MS/MS metabolomic analysis demonstrated obvious clustering of the two varieties and underscored the enrichment of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways in ‘PA’. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 11,653 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), of which 7633 were elevated and linked to secondary metabolism. Key biosynthetic genes, including PAL, 4CL, CHS, DFR, and ANS, alongside transcription factors such as MYB—specifically TRINITY_DN5277_c0_g1, which is downregulated in ‘PA’ (homologous to AtMYB4, a negative regulator of flavonoid biosynthesis)—and TRINITY_DN23167_c0_g1, which is significantly upregulated in ‘PA’ (homologous to AtMYB90, a positive regulator of anthocyanin synthesis), as well as bHLH, ERF, and WRKY (notably TRINITY_DN25903_c0_g1, highly upregulated in ‘PA’ and homologous to AtWRKY75, associated with jasmonate pathway), demonstrating a coordinated activation of color and fragrance pathways. The integration of metabolomic and transcriptome data indicates that the pink-flowered ‘PA’ variety attains its superior coloring and aroma via the synchronized transcriptional regulation of the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways. These findings offer novel molecular insights into the genetic and metabolic interplay of floral characteristics in Hydrangea. Full article

Characterizing and simulating complex reservoirs, particularly unconventional resources with multiscale and non-homogeneous features, presents significant bottlenecks in cost, efficiency, and accuracy for conventional research methods. Consequently, there is an urgent need for the digital and intelligent transformation of the field. To address this challenge, this paper proposes that the core solution lies in the deep integration of physical mechanisms and data intelligence. We systematically review and define a new research paradigm characterized by the trinity of digital cores (geometric foundation), physical simulation (mechanism constraints), and artificial intelligence (efficient reasoning). This review clarifies the core technological path: first, AI technologies such as generative adversarial networks and super-resolution empower digital cores to achieve high-fidelity, multiscale geometric characterization; second, cross-scale physical simulations (e.g., molecular dynamics and the lattice Boltzmann method) provide indispensable constraints and high-fidelity training data. Building on this, the methodology evolves from surrogate models to physics-informed neural networks, and ultimately to neural operators that learn the solution operator. The analysis demonstrates that integrating these techniques into an automated “generation–simulation–inversion” closed-loop system effectively overcomes the limitations of isolated data and the lack of physical interpretability. This closed-loop workflow offers innovative solutions to complex engineering problems such as parameter inversion and history matching. In conclusion, this integration paradigm serves not only as a cornerstone for constructing reservoir digital twins and realizing real-time decision-making but also provides robust technical support for emerging energy industries, including carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS), geothermal energy, and underground hydrogen storage. Green brands are increasingly leveraging electronic commerce and interactive marketing to enhance persuasive efforts in new media environments. However, empirical research on the role of linguistic rhetoric in these interactive settings remains limited. This study examines whether the use of homophonic puns in green brand advertising increases green purchase intention on digital platforms, and how visual salience moderates this effect. Across four online experiments (total N = 1382), using stimuli modeled on social media feeds and mobile commerce interfaces, we manipulated advertising copy to include either homophonic puns or non-pun alternatives and varied the level of interface salience. The results indicate that homophonic puns significantly increase green purchase intention, primarily through the mechanism of affiliative humor, which proved stronger than alternative humor pathways. Moreover, visual salience moderates this effect: high-salience layouts amplify humor perception and purchase intention, while low-salience conditions yield no significant effects. This study advances the field of interactive marketing by proposing a language–emotion–behavior framework and introducing a cross-modal synergy mechanism that links linguistic rhetoric with visual attention in digital media contexts. The findings provide both theoretical insights and practical implications for e-commerce platforms, particularly in optimizing advertising copy, attention design, and message placement strategies to align pun-based messages with high-salience executions, thereby enhancing green brand engagement. This mini-review discusses recent advances in the rigorous application of Bonding Evolution Theory (BET) to elucidate electron rearrangements in cycloaddition reactions occurring in both ground and electronically excited states. Computational studies reveal that describing bond formation and cleavage through parametric polynomials derived from the Catastrophe Theory (CT) provides a deeper and more coherent understanding of chemical bonding and reactivity. However, several existing BET applications have adopted CT concepts without fully incorporating the mathematical rigor on which BET is based, resulting in conceptual ambiguities and inaccurate interpretations. A proper implementation of BET requires evaluating the Hessian matrix at potentially degenerate critical points (CPs) of the Electron Localization Function (ELF) and assessing their relative evolution along the reaction coordinate. This systematic protocol integrates key CT principles within BET’s original framework, restoring its formal consistency. The resulting analyses have revealed correlations between electron-density symmetry and CT polynomials, relationships between these polynomials and the homolytic or heterolytic character of bond dissociation, and the development of a CT-based model for scaling bond polarity. These findings demonstrate that incorporating CT-derived functions into BET is not merely a formal refinement but a fundamental step toward achieving a more rigorous and predictive understanding of electron rearrangements in cycloadditions. For the study, we used four kerosene-based ferrofluid samples containing magnetite nanoparticles stabilized with oleic acid. Starting from the initial sample (A0), the other three samples were obtained by dilution with kerosene. The complex magnetic permeability measurements were performed in the microwave region (0.5–6) GHz, for different H values of the polarizing magnetic field, between (0–115) kA/m. These measurements revealed the ferromagnetic resonance phenomenon for each sample, allowing the determination of the anisotropy field (HA) and the effective anisotropy constant (Keff) of nanoparticles, depending on the volume fraction of particles (φ). At the same time, the measurements allowed the determination of the specific magnetic loss power (pm), effective heating rate (HReff), intrinsic loss power (ILP), and specific absorption rate (SAR) as functions of the frequency (f) and magnetic field (H), of all investigated samples, using newly proposed equations for their calculation. For the first time, this study evaluates the maximum limit of the applied polarizing magnetic field (Hmax ≈ 80 kA/m) and the minimum limit volume fraction of nanoparticles (φmin ≈ 3.5%) at which microwave heating of the ferrofluid remains efficient. At the same time, the results obtained show that the temperature increase of the ferrofluid samples, upon interaction with a microwave field, can be controlled by varying both H and φ, pointing to possible applications in magnetic hyperthermia. Pulpitis is the inflammatory response of the dental pulp to microbial challenge and can range from mild to severe in nature, with severe pulpitis traditionally resulting in pulp removal and root canal treatment (RCT). In the pursuit of more conservative treatments, recent clinical practice guidelines have recommended strategies that preserve the vitality of the dental pulp, rather than RCT, when possible. This has increased the focus on improving the accuracy of pulp diagnosis, which will direct treatment and improve management outcomes. Unfortunately, current point-of-care (PoC) tools are subjective, lack discrimination and rely on the stimulation of pulpal neurons, limiting dentists’ ability to objectively identify the level of inflammation. Molecular biomarker assessment has the potential to dynamically analyse pulpitis and correlate this with inflammatory thresholds and treatment outcomes. Numerous chemokines, cytokines, proteases and growth factors exhibit altered expression during pulpitis and can be collected intraoperatively as part of routine dental treatment. Although current data indicate several markers that could be used as next-generation diagnostic chairside tools for pulpitis, there are currently no commercial kits. Considering the interest in vital pulp treatment, there is an urgent need to engage researchers, industry, dentists and other stakeholders in the development of PoC diagnostic assays for pulpitis. This paper examines what Hannah Arendt means when she urges us to “love the world as it is” considering that we live in a world that is marred by injustice and violence. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part, demonstrates how Arendt’s concept of amor mundi is deeply influenced by her reading of St. Augustine. The second part, in turn addresses the challenge of loving the world as it is, given Arendt’s agreement with Augustine that we live in a desert. It argues that Arendt departs from Augustine on two fronts, first she rejects notions of original sin and forgiveness in favour of reconciliation, and second, she rejects the idea of divine grace claiming that our only hope for a new humanity lies in loving the world as it is. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia globally, linked to significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Catheter ablation has emerged as a primary therapeutic approach, yet substantial recurrence rates limit its long-term efficacy. This review critically examines the molecular mechanisms underlying AF recurrence post-ablation, synthesizing recent findings from current literature. Key molecular pathways identified include structural remodeling mediated by fibrosis involving transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), ion-channel dysregulation, inflammatory pathways, autonomic nervous system imbalance, and genetic and epigenetic alterations. Despite considerable advances, critical gaps persist due to small, heterogeneous studies and insufficient long-term follow-up. Comprehensive mechanistic research integrating genomics, proteomics, and advanced imaging is urgently needed to better characterize these pathways. Future studies must validate biomarkers such as TGF-β1, MMPs, connexins, and novel markers like GDF-15 and relaxin. Clinical translation of these molecular insights through precision diagnostics and personalized interventions holds great promise to enhance patient selection, optimize ablation strategies, reduce recurrence, and ultimately improve clinical outcomes in AF management. Para-Aortic Lymph Node Dissection and Metastasis Increase the Rate of Postoperative VTE in Gynaecological Cancers

Objective: We investigated the relationship between venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy (LND) within the first 90 days post gynaecological cancer surgery. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 1021 patients who underwent gynaecological cancer surgery between 2006 and 2019. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to assess the effects of LND and lymph node (LN) metastasis on VTE occurrence within 90 days post-surgery. Results: A total of 41 patients developed VTE within 90 days post-surgery. Para-aortic LND was significantly associated with VTE (p < 0.001), with the highest rates (14.6%) observed in patients who had >10 para-aortic LN removed. In patients with pelvic LN metastasis, 10 (7.5%) developed VTE; patients with >5 pelvic nodes positive for metastasis had an HR = 4.83 (95% CI: 0.99–13.9) after adjustment for age, duration of hospital stay, and surgical approach. The highest VTE rates (27.3%) occurred in patients with >5 para-aortic LN positive for metastasis, HR = 3.79 (95% CI 1.44–14.23) after adjustment for age, duration of hospital stay, and surgical approach (p = 0.011). Conclusions: Para-aortic LND significantly increases VTE risk within the first 90 days post-surgery. The risk is further amplified in cases with metastatic LN and persists even after adjustment for other risk factors for VTE. While extended thromboprophylaxis is standard for all cancer patients, our findings suggest that para-aortic LND—especially with nodal metastases—may help identify those who would benefit most from a more tailored, risk-based prophylaxis approach. This article explores how people with intellectual disabilities can be more involved in evaluating and regulating the services they use and the quality of their lives. Traditionally, these evaluations have been performed by professionals, but we argue that people with lived experience of intellectual disabilities bring unique insights and should be part of the process. The idea builds on ‘inclusive research’, where people with intellectual disabilities are not just subjects of research but active researchers. We use the term ‘inclusive evaluation’, to describe the active engagement of people with intellectual disabilities in inspecting and assessing services to ensure they meet standards and respect human rights. The paper describes a small exploratory study involving interviews with regulators, professionals, and people with intellectual disabilities across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand who had been involved in inclusive evaluations. It found strong support for it, highlighting benefits such as greater trust and empathy during evaluations with users of services, more meaningful feedback for service providers, and increased confidence and employment opportunities for evaluators with disabilities. However, challenges remain, including funding and fair pay for the engagement of people with intellectual disabilities, training opportunities that meet the support needs of all stakeholders, and changing the cultural attitudes in support services that underestimate the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. Steps to overcome these challenges are proposed such as piloting inclusive evaluation programmes, providing inclusive evaluation training to all involved, and lobbying governments to fund these roles. We conclude with a proposed implementation framework and a set of guiding principles that will nurture a spirit of inclusion and respect in service evaluations. Full article
