Synthetic polymers, generically named plastics, are manufactured from non-renewable sources, such as fossil fuels [1]. In 2020, 367 million metric tons of plastic were produced worldwide, and, only in 2018, global plastic waste volume reached 342.6 million metric tons [2,3]. One of the most used plastics is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is not environmentally friendly. The goal of this study was to achieve an eco-friendly substitute for PVC tapes while mimicking their properties and applications. In this way, bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan (CH) tapes in different concentrations, 1% and 2%, were developed. Mechanical properties, thickness, bonds between BC and CH and degradation tests were assessed in water and under different temperatures. Mechanical testing showed that the combination of the two polymers resulted in better mechanical performances when compared to BC tape (8.52 ± 1.11 MPa); this may be related to the stronger chemical bonds created between the BC and CH. In addition, BC–CH at 1% revealed closer values of strength compared to PVC tapes (703.19 ± 16.18 MPa and 516.92 ± 22.0 MPa, respectively). Moreover, with the present study we were able to conclude that the incorporation of CH increases tape porosity. Interestingly, higher porosities (BC and CH at 2%) resulted in better mechanical properties upon tensile testing (1344 ± 52.87 MPa). Upon contact with water, the BC–CH mixture at 1% proved to be more resistant and not mechanically affected over time, like PCV tape. Thermally, both tapes with CH revealed to be more resistant than the PVC tape. However, the BC–CH tape at 1% was the most stable over time at all temperatures tested. This preliminary study opens new possibilities to the use of these tapes in sport areas, packaging and pharmaceutical or biomedical fields. Full article

The increasing concern in the mitigation of lead exposure to the human body has given rise to international regulations that limit its content in raw materials. For the particular case of brass alloys, lead-free chemical compositions have been developed as more ecologically appropriate solutions. The absence of lead is generally unfavorable when it comes to the well-known fabrication ease of brass alloys. Such a fact, allied with the novelty and thus lack of data regarding these alloys, brings to focus the need for material characterization. In this study, the hot workability of two brass alloys, with 3% (CW617N) and without lead content (CW510L), is investigated. Compression tests at high temperatures and variable strain rates were performed, allowing for flow stress identification in similar-to-manufacturing conditions. The higher mechanical strength of the lead-free brass results in significantly larger press loads, hindering one-step forging operations. These have been numerically modeled and simulated for different operative conditions, thus aiding in the definition of industrial process parameters, namely in what concerns billet size and die-filling defect minimization. This article aims to study a new ceramic paste mixing red clay with coffee residues in 3D printing, proposing an effective solution for the recycling of coffee residues. Intense studies were made on clay paste containing 5, 10, 15, and 20% coffee grounds. The morphological and chemical aspects were evaluated through SEM, Micro CT, and FTIR images; physical and mechanical properties were assessed by mechanical resistance, absorption, and drying tests, with the aim to obtain results on the hardness, permeability, absorption, and weight; finally, 3D-printing tests were performed to study the paste behavior and understand its advantages in new emerging technologies. The incorporation of coffee residues in red clay results in a light and very porous product; thus increasing the water absorption and apparent porosity. Some pieces were created to test the structural capacity and consistency of the paste. The idea was to create bricks, floors, and coverings. Full article

Solid state reaction was used to produced barium titanate modified with calcium (BCT) showing the presence of the piezoelectric tetragonal phase after sintering at 1350 °C. Bioglass 45S5 (BG) was synthetized by sol-gel route. From these two materials and commercial hydroxyapatite (HAp) were obtained composites. The BG produced showed some cytotoxic character that was weakened by passivation. All other materials were non-cytotoxic. Contact polarization at constant temperature was chosen composites polarization. Electric/dielectric properties were evaluated by thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC). The material showed bioactivity with the composite with BCT/BG/HAp 90/5/5 (wt%) showing increased bioactivity. In vitro test showed high proliferation rates for the composites. Full article

There is a wide use of composites in the production of load bearing structures. Recently it was recognized that composites can be affected by cyclic loading. Drilling act as a stress concentration notch, leading to damage propagation and failure. In this work, a batch of carbon/epoxy plates is drilled under different conditions, thrust force is monitored and hole surrounding region is inspected. The area and other features of the damaged region are computed. Finally, the specimens are subjected to Open-Hole Fatigue tests. Results will help to establish a relation between the damaged region and the material’s fatigue resistance. Full article

Understanding biaxial deformation is essential for a more realistic evaluation of rubber elasticity compared to the more usual uniaxial deformation. To study crystallisation occurring during biaxial deformation of natural rubber films, a new simple equipment has been designed and assembled. The equipment, mounted in the beamline of ALBA synchrotron light source facility, allowed the in-situ measurement of X-ray scattering of natural rubber during biaxial deformation. This work provides, for the first time, quantitative information on crystallisation during biaxial extension. Full article

The growing demand for metals with high performance and optimal mechanical properties, especially in highly corrosive environments under high-temperature conditions, has led to the increased use of duplex stainless steels. Its applications are increasingly diverse, from the petrochemical industry to thermal and energy production facilities. Many of the components used in duplex stainless steel must undergo machining operations. However, this type of alloy is within the group of alloys considered difficult to machine. Effectively, in addition to the high mechanical strength characteristic of this alloy, the adhesion of this alloy to cutting tools is well known, leading to premature wear phenomena, which generates the excessive consumption of tools, with the consequent problems of economic and environmental sustainability. This study aims to evaluate the behavior improvement presented by tools coated with TiAlN and TiAlSiN when milling an alloy widely used in industrial terms: the UNS S32101 alloy. Full article

Gyroid foams have significant potential for biomedical applications. Their highly porous configuration is beneficial for biological cell growth and proliferation, and thus, they are a valid alternative to design scaffolds for biomedical applications, such as bone tissue growth. The modification of the cell density allows for the mechanical properties of the implant to be adjusted and avoiding unwanted phenomena, such as stress shielding occurring when the stiffness of the implant is much higher than the stiffness of the replaced tissue. Thus, this work consisted of the analysis of the gyroid unit cells through numerical homogenization. The obtained results allowed to correlate the apparent density of the gyroid foam with the relative Young’s modulus and relative yield stress. Full article
