Cover Story: Smart cities increasingly depend on vast streams of sensor data, and choosing how that data flows from devices into cloud analytics is critical to meet application requirements. In a 21‑day real-world pilot, we compared seven serverless data layer architectures that move LoRaWAN sensor data from The Things Network into Delta Lake tables on Microsoft Azure. We jointly measured ingestion reliability, latency and cloud cost, and used a proxy to measure implementation complexity, revealing clear trade-offs: ultra‑low‑cost but delayed batch ingestion; cost‑effective near‑real‑time options; and premium pipelines that maximize completeness. The result is a practical, reproducible guide that maps common smart city requirements—archival, near‑real‑time, or mission‑critical—to concrete cloud patterns that can be deployed today. View this paper
