Smart Cities was indexed in Scopus (Elsevier), starting with Volume 1 (Issue 1).
2022 Smart Cities received its first CiteScore (2021) of 5.5.
2023 Smart Cities adopted a bimonthly publication schedule.
Smart Cities received its first Impact Factor (2022) of 6.4.
Smart Cities received its CiteScore (2022) of 8.5.
2024 Smart Cities received its 2023 Impact Factor (7.0), ranked 3/77 in "Urban Studies" and 34/352 in "Engineering, Electrical and Electronic".
Smart Cities received its 2023 CiteScore (11.2), ranked 6/279 in "Urban Studies", 74/797 in "Electrical and Electronic Engineering", and 53/350 in "Artificial Intelligence"..
2025  Smart Cities established the following sections:
  • Artificial Intelligence and LLM Agents for Data-Driven Decisions in Smart Cities;
  • Spaces, Environmental and Cultural Preservation in Smart Cities;
  • Resilient Smart Cities;
  • Urban Digital Twins and Urban Informatics.
Smart Buildings was renamed as Buildings in Smart Cities.
Smart Urban Infrastructures was renamed as Physical Infrastructures and Networks in Smart Cities.
Smart Transportation 
was renamed as Smart Urban Mobility, Transport, and Logistics.
Energy and ICT 
was renamed as Smart Urban Energies and Integrated Systems.
Internet of Things 
was renamed as Internet of Things, Computing, and Communications Technologies in Smart Cities.
Smart Grids, Smart Data, Cloud Computing, Applied Science and Humanities for Smart Cities, Smart Positioning and Timing, Smart Health, Smart Sensors, Smart Business were discontinued.
2026 Smart Cities adopted a monthly publication schedule.
