Cover Story: Resistive voltage dividers tend to have a highly nonlinear transfer function as parasitic and stray capacitances exert an increasing influence with increasing frequency. As a consequence, the measured signal differs in shape from the original input signal. Here, we present an improved resistive voltage divider using surface-mounted resistors with an additional compensation electrode on the adjacent side of a printed circuit board to extend the linear bandwidth. This new concept improves the linear bandwidth from 115 kHz to 88 MHz, while maintaining a DC input impedance of 10 MΩ. Finally, the developed resistive voltage divider was successfully used to measure fast high-voltage transients. View this paper
