Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid development of modern industrial engineering has caused mechanical systems to work under ever more severe conditions, these being higher operating speeds, greater payloads and high accuracy levels. Although such advances greatly increase productivity, they inevitably lead to more undesirable structural vibrations and acoustic noise. Continuous vibration and noise not only impair the structural integrity, fatigue life and operational reliability of mechanical components but also cause serious environmental pollution and pose health risks to the operators. Traditional passive damping techniques are generally inadequate when dealing with the multi-frequency, non-linear and transient dynamic disturbances that occur in next-generation engineering applications. As a result, research into advanced, adaptive and intelligent technologies for the control of vibration and noise has become a vital global trend and a top priority. Thanks to recent progress in smart materials, artificial intelligence and digital twins, the engineering community now has unprecedented opportunities to develop high-performance mitigation strategies. It is both highly timely and important to deal with these challenges since they connect fundamental academic theories in the field of structural dynamics with practical, real-world engineering solutions in the automotive, aerospace, marine and robotic industries.

This Special Issue seeks to present and spread the latest developments concerning vibration mitigation, acoustic control and dynamic optimization in modern engineering applications. We welcome submissions that focus on theoretical breakthroughs, computational innovations, cutting-edge experimental methods and comprehensive review papers which extend the current boundaries of mitigation technologies. 

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Active, passive and hybrid vibration isolation and control systems.
  • Rotational and gyroscopic motion.
  • Vibrations and chaotic analysis of the dynamical systems.
  • Smart materials and structures, including piezoelectric actuators and magnetorheological fluids.
  • Acoustic and elastic metamaterials for wave manipulation and noise reduction.
  • Vehicle noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) analysis and testing.
  • Data-driven approaches, machine learning and digital twins for vibration diagnostics and control.
  • Nonlinear structural dynamics, modeling and complex mechanical system optimization.

In order to promote fruitful scholarly interchange and advance the area, we invite scholars and practitioners to present their perspectives, current discoveries and creative methods pertaining to these subjects.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
