Cover Story: Cover story: In this paper, we present a study on the evolution of crystal mosaicity during dendritic solidification of single-crystal nickel-based superalloys prepared by seeded Bridgman processing. The work was performed in the frame of the Collaborative Research Center SFB/TR 103 “From Atoms to Turbine Blades—a Scientific Basis for a New Generation of Single-Crystal Superalloys”. In this center, scientists from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Friedrich–Alexander Universität Erlangen–Nürnberg (FAU), Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZ Jülich), and German Aerospace Center (DLR) focus on various important research objectives related to single-crystal nickel-based superalloys. Today, these superalloys are considered the key material for modern gas turbines. This research activity is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). View Paper here.
