Cover Story: Due to the increased complexity of the energy landscape, electricity production companies as well as policy makers rely on energy system optimization models (ESOMs) to guide them in nationwide energy planning. Key input parameters for such models are the capacity and efficiency values of the available energy converters: gas turbines, internal combustion engines (ICEs), fuel cells, etc. These metrics will however need to be revised when switching from fossil to renewable fuels, particularly for ICEs. To circumvent the time and cost associated with engine experiments, this study therefore proposes and explores the viability of using arithmetic scaling laws. These laws aim to predict the power and efficiency values of ICEs based on their size requirement within the energy system. View this paper
