Epilepsy Among Children and Adolescents
This special issue belongs to the section "Developmental Neuroscience".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Epilepsy affects over 18 million children and adolescents worldwide, making it one of the most prevalent neurological disorders in pediatrics, with recent Global Burden of Disease data reporting 8.24 million cases of idiopathic epilepsy and 9.91 million secondary cases as of 2021.
The recent literature has produced transformative advances in the field: precision medicine via trio-based whole-exome sequencing identifying SLC2A1 variants linked to developmental epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs); next-generation antiseizure medications; neurostimulation methods such as responsive vagus nerve and deep brain stimulation; hundreds of novel epilepsy genes (e.g., SCN3A) boosting DEE diagnostic yields beyond 40%; and AI-driven tools achieving 93-97.5% accuracy in EEG interictal discharge detection, rs-fMRI lesion identification, and focal cortical dysplasia spotting up to 94%—all revolutionizing seizure prediction and personalized prognostication.
This landmark Special Issue offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary exploration of pediatric epilepsy—from precision diagnostics and innovative therapies to comorbidities like neurodevelopmental delays and lifelong cognitive outcomes—empowering clinicians, researchers, and families to transform care paradigms.
We invite contributions of original research articles, rigorous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, pivotal clinical trials, illuminating case series, and innovative translational studies exploring disease mechanisms, cutting-edge interventions, real-world evidence, and patient-centered approaches in childhood epilepsy. High-impact submissions will drive global advancements and reach our influential readership of pediatric neurologists, epileptologists, neuroscientists, and policy-makers.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Brain Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
