Cover Story: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by dysregulation of the host response and progressive destruction of periodontal tissues. Although scaling and root planning are the cornerstones of periodontal therapy, persistent inflammation may compromise tissue repair. Lutein, a plant-derived xanthophyll carotenoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may represent a promising systemic adjunct. In this study, we investigated whether systemic lutein supplementation could modulate experimental periodontitis and enhance periodontal repair following mechanical therapy in Wistar rats. Our findings indicate that lutein reduced inflammatory changes and alveolar bone resorption, while improving the response to periodontal treatment. View this paper
