Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Dental caries is a common non-communicable disease that affects all age groups and a significant part of the global population. The disease has a complex etiology, with a combination of genetic, dietary, social, lifestyle, and behavior-related elements that affect the oral environment and the dental biofilm adjacent to the teeth. Thus, caries is unevenly distributed in the population with an elevated prevalence towards vulnerable low-income populations, as well as those with low education levels, who consume excess sugar, and have limited access to care. In order to bridge this divide among such inequalities in oral health, periodic caries risk assessments linked to preventive care protocols are essential components in contemporary dentistry. In the case of the population level, school-based activities can be realized as well as nursery–home schemes for the frail and elderly. For the individual patient, the goal is to communicate the risk level and tailor a personalized care plan.

The aim of this Special Issue is to publish recent cutting-edge research concerning caries risk assessment of preschool children, school children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and the elderly. The effect of traditional and innovative preventive programs linked to caries risk is also a focus of this Special Issue.

In this Special Issue, all types of research linked to the topic are welcome, but longitudinal studies and birth cohorts designed to determine the causal relationship between potential risk factors and caries development are prioritized. Manuscripts presenting health–economic aspects, access to care, and qualitative research, including health promotion, are also welcome.
