Cover Story: Orthodontic appliances may increase plaque accumulation and oral malodor, affecting both oral health and quality of life in adolescents. This randomized clinical trial investigated, for the first time, the effects of a natural Cotinus coggygria (Smoke Tree) mouthwash on halitosis and oral hygiene in orthodontic patients. After two weeks of use, the mouthwash significantly reduced hydrogen sulfide and total volatile sulfur compounds while also improving plaque and gingival indices compared with placebo. No adverse effects were reported. These findings highlight the potential of plant-derived oral care products as safe and effective alternatives for managing halitosis and maintaining oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. View this paper
