Cover Story: Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of life-threatening neonatal infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes. It is classified into 10 different serotypes based on the capsular polysaccharide (CPS). No effective vaccine is clinically available. In this study by Wang et al., six conserved virulence factors involved in GBS pathogenesis at different stages were formulated as the GBSV6 vaccine. Intranasal GBSV6 immunization (i.n.) induced systemic and vaginal antibodies and T cell responses in mice. The immunity reduced mouse mortality and vaginal colonization by various GBS serotypes and protected newborns of immunized dams against the GBS challenge. The findings indicate that i.n. immunization targeting multiple conserved GBS virulence factors induces serotype-independent immunity, which protects against GBS infection systemically and vaginally in dams and prevents newborn deaths.
