2026 September-2 - 160 articles

Cover Story: An emerging myxozoan parasite, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, has been discovered in fish hosts in the Great Lakes region, the world’s largest freshwater watershed. Variably low prevalence infection, but no gross signs of proliferative kidney disease, were detected in migratory Chinook and Coho Salmon stocks sampled from fish weirs across years and locations in Michigan. Subclinical infection in the kidney was verified with a solid multi-line-of-evidence approach, sensitively quantified by PCR, and confirmed upon sequence analysis. Histology and a new IHC protocol showed that Coho and Chinook may act as active hosts and allow for parasite life cycle propagation. The relevance of the findings is framed within the ongoing climate change scenario, making environmental conditions more suitable for parasite transmission and also disease insurgence in this region. View this paper
