Cover Story: Dietary crude protein (CP) reduction with in-feed amino acid supplementation is recommended for pigs to reduce nitrogen excretion. However, its applicability may depend on pig sex, genetic types and feed costs under different market scenarios. The experimental diet used in this study did not affect feed and water intake, growth, or feed conversion rate, compared with controls. However, males had greater average daily gains than females. Nitrogen efficiency was impaired when females had no limiting dietary CP. Carcass and meat traits were similar across sexes, but pigs fed the low-CP diet had higher fat contents than controls. Sex was the only factor affecting the economic margins per pig. This strategy may be used in the Duroc sire line genotype during the finishing phase, particularly to reduce the nitrogen excreted by females.
