Cover Story: Neutron-capture elements preserve a record of the Solar System’s stellar precursors. This review examines how molybdenum isotope ratios, measured by thermal ionization mass spectrometry in terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples, can trace these precursors and, potentially, the origin of life-essential volatile elements. Recent isotopic studies challenge earlier interpretations that Earth’s final stages of accretion involved significant contributions from the volatile-rich outer Solar System. Instead, emerging evidence suggests that the final stages of Earth’s accretion were dominated by volatile-poor inner Solar System material, reducing the need for a substantial late delivery of life-bearing essential volatile elements. This review highlights how cosmochemistry connects stellar nucleosynthesis, planet formation, and the origin of life on Earth. View this paper
