Cover Story: Blue light cystoscopy is the most recent breakthrough in the diagnostics of bladder cancer, a common cancer with high rates of recurrence. The photodynamic diagnosis technique uses a photosensitizer as an adjunct to white light cystoscopy to enhance in vivo detection of malignant tissues based on their distinctive fluorescence. Although it has improved detection rates, fluorescence-assisted cystoscopy remains invasive and costly. In parallel, a variety of non-invasive tests and microdevices for the detection of urinary biomarkers of bladder cancer have been developed, none of which have yet entered routine clinical use due to unsatisfactory sensitivity. Following a brief description of the current approaches and their limitations, we provide a systematic review of a new niche research aiming to develop a non-invasive adaptation of photodynamic diagnosis.
