28–29 November 2017 5th Annual Advances in Prenatal Molecular Diagnostics

Hyatt Regency Cambridge, Cambridge, MA

Cell-free DNA-based screening and the potential for cell-based screening has upended the field of prenatal testing. While cell-free tests are being used more and more in the clinic, cell-based tests are still on the cusp of commercialization. With both types of tests still in need of improvements in order to truly replace invasive tests, the near-term challenge is determining where the field heads once both options are viable. This meeting will discuss updated comparisons and examine the implementation, insurance, and clinical challenges associated with each test.

Furthermore, with advances in DNA amplification and sequencing comes greater opportunity to garner more information. Much discussion needs to take place in regards to the role of preconception counseling, expanded carrier screening, whole genome versus whole exome sequencing, and the effect these and any prenatal testing may have on the decision to continue a pregnancy or perform fetal therapy.

14 September 2011 Diagnostic Error: understanding it and reducing it

Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

A joint event between the Scottish Clinical Skills Network, the Scottish Intensive Care Society, and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, with support from Healthcare Improvement Scotland, aims to help us understand and reduce diagnostic error in the UK.

Diagnosis is a fundamental component of clinical medicine - good diagnosticians are revered by their peers and treasured by their patients. Yet diagnostic error is the second most common preventable error made by doctors, with major implications for patient safety and quality of care. Many factors result in diagnostic error. Some, such as lack of knowledge, are easily identifiable and correctable. Others are more difficult to recognise and rectify. In particular the thought processes, both conscious and unconscious, leading to the formulation of a diagnosis, are fraught with difficulty and prone to error. Cognitive errors are frequent and compounded by affective biases.

This symposium will explore the ways doctors think, and provide a framework to understand how these processes may lead to diagnostic error and patient harm. World leading figures in the field will explain the concepts, and provide advice on how to improve individual diagnostic performance as well as strategies to improve patient safety in healthcare systems. The symposium will close with a panel discussion.

23–24 September 2013 Advances in Prenatal Molecular Diagnostics Conference

Boston, MA, USA

In recent years there have been dramatic changes in the field of prenatal diagnostics, both as a result of new technical capabilities, as well as concerns over the risks and limitations associated with traditional diagnostic approaches. The transition in favor of array-based cytogenetic assays in place of traditional karyotyping is well underway. For higher risk pregnancies, the use of sequence-based testing of cell-free DNA in maternal blood is becoming more common, although evidence of genetic abnormalities must then still be confirmed with more invasive procedures. Research aimed at isolation of nucleated fetal cells from maternal blood could provide better answers with lower risk in the future. Advances in single cell sequencing are being applied to pre-implantation diagnostics and could be particularly powerful when combined with fetal cell isolation from maternal blood. Progress is also being made in the development of biomarkers to assess the risk of both pre-term labor and pre-eclampsia, which offer the potential of much earlier steps to limit these dangers. While technical developments will be important, there are also a number of other factors, including regulatory and reimbursement challenges, as well as clinical and genetic counseling perspectives, that need to be understood in order to forecast how this field is likely to develop over the next few years.

5–7 November 2014 Advances in Prenatal Molecular Diagnostics

Boston, MA, USA

The field of prenatal diagnostics is undergoing rapid and significant change, as a variety of molecular diagnostics are transforming the type and quality of data that can be provided to pregnant women and their physicians. Array-based cytogenetic analysis can provide more detailed and accurate assessment of many genetic conditions compared with traditional karyotyping, both of which rely on samples obtained using invasive procedures. Since obtaining samples invasively, even in the most proficient hands, does involve some risk to the fetus, there has been tremendous interest in non-invasive testing approaches. Next-gen sequencing of cell-free DNA found in maternal blood has been demonstrated to provide highly accurate assessment of fetal aneuploidies, with quite low false positives and false negatives, in most cases. Best practice guidelines have been modified quite quickly to recommend that such testing be offered to women who are at increased risk of aneuploidies, either because of past history, advanced maternal age or other reasons, and adoption and agreement by insurers to cover such testing has occurred at unprecedented speed. Such tests are not without controversy, however, because they only test for the most common chromosome duplications, and are unable thus far to provide analysis of smaller genetic insertions, deletions and rearrangements. One alternative approach has been research on obtaining circulating fetal cells from maternal blood, which would offer the advantages of being non-invasive, and isolated from confounding maternal DNA, but the challenges of reliably obtaining such rare cells has delayed the prospects for commercialization. This conference will provide an in-depth examination of key issues, technical and practical developments in these areas, and opportunities for discussing some of the issues that will have an impact on how this field continues to quickly evolve in the near future.

30 May–3 June 2017 ESPR 2017 – 53rd Annual Meeting & 39th Post Graduate Course

Davos, Switzerland

It has been more than 20 years since our meeting was held in Lugano/Switzerland, and so much has changed in the world of paediatric radiology, but the only thing that has remained constant is the commitment and the talent of the ESPR community! We sincerely hope that this meeting will provide a platform for networking, will advance education and provide the frame for both, making new and renew old friendships in our alpine city.

The ESPR 2017 course builds on the spirit of previous years and is structured around six pathology-based sessions with functional correlation, one session dedicated to neonatal imaging and one session focused upon radiation protection. The highlight of this course is an international discussion panel with renowned experts who will demonstrate the clinical and radiological features in a case-based session dedicated to child abuse and genetic-metabolic mimickers.

We are living in a rapidly evolving world, in which new diseases and an intensive population exchange across countries are deemed to have a long lasting and global financial and epidemiological impact. We will have two special focus sessions dedicated to emerging infectious diseases like ZIKA virus and to the problem of age assessment in juvenile migrants, highlighting the clinical and radiological aspects of these two new and poorly investigated topics.

To underscore the importance of international communication, two “ESPR meets CHOP” Mini-Symposia will be held, in which eminent European and American experts will exchange their radiological experience and knowledge about various specific diseases including neuroblastoma, sarcoma and many more.

This exciting, thoughtful and stimulating programme would not be possible without the commitment of dozens of members, non-members and vendors willing to support the ESPR by sharing their expertise, time and resources. We are confident that you will find the venue and networking, research and educational opportunities inspirational and fun.
