Dear Colleagues,

The impact of physical activity, lifestyle, and nutrition on children's health is a rapidly evolving area of research that holds immense potential for improving public health outcomes worldwide. Given the success of the previous Special Issue, titled "The Impact of Physical Activity, Lifestyle, and Nutritional Intake on Children’s Health", we are pleased to announce that we are launching a second Special Issue on this topic, titled “The Impact of Physical Activity, Lifestyle, and Nutritional Intake on Children’s Health—2nd Edition”.

We would like to encourage researchers to publish their works in the following domains.

  1. Childhood obesity and related chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular issues, are at historically high levels. Research can help identify the most effective strategies for preventing these conditions through targeted physical activity programs, lifestyle interventions, and improved nutritional practices. By focusing on the early years, we can develop preventive measures that reduce the long-term burden on healthcare systems.
  2. Personalized approaches to health. Children’s health needs are not one-size-fits-all. Different age groups, socioeconomic backgrounds, and genetic predispositions mean that tailored approaches to physical activity and nutrition are critical. Research can help identify which combinations of physical activity, dietary interventions, and lifestyle changes are most effective for diverse populations of children. A deeper understanding of these factors can lead to more personalized and accessible health interventions.
  3. The role of early interventions. Early childhood is a critical period for physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Research into how early patterns of activity, diet, and lifestyle impact long-term health outcomes can help design interventions that begin in preschool or even earlier.
  4. Long-term impacts on mental and cognitive health. While much of the existing research has focused on the physical aspects of children’s health, growing evidence shows that physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle also play crucial roles in mental health and cognitive development. Investigating the links between diet, exercise, and brain health could uncover powerful ways to enhance learning, reduce behavioral issues, and prevent mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression in children.
  5. Environmental and social influences. Children’s health behaviors are shaped not only by individual choices but also by their environment—school policies, community infrastructure, family dynamics, and socioeconomic factors. Research is needed to better understand how these external factors influence physical activity levels, eating habits, and overall lifestyle. Identifying ways to create healthier environments for children can lead to more effective public health policies, such as better school nutrition programs, safer places for physical activity, and more community-based health initiatives.
  6. Innovations in technology and monitoring. Advances in technology, such as wearable fitness trackers, mobile apps, and online platforms, provide new opportunities to track children’s physical activity and nutritional intake in real time. Research into how these technologies can be integrated into daily routines to improve health outcomes could lead to more interactive and engaging ways for children to manage their health. It could also offer parents, educators, and healthcare providers valuable insights into children’s habits and progress.

Research on the relationships among physical activity, lifestyle choices, and nutrition in children is critical for addressing the growing health challenges facing today's youth. It can lead to more effective prevention strategies, improved health interventions, and better-informed public health policies.

Cardiometabolic and Biochemical Indicators in Adolescent Girls According to Nutritional Status and Lifestyle

Background: Adolescence represents an essential stage of life for the prevention of metabolic changes associated with diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to identify nutritional status and associate it with metabolic alterations in adolescent girls. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study that included adolescent 10–14-year-old girls from public schools. The research was undertaken with 79 girls. Results: We identified that over half of the girls were sedentary, excessively exposed to screens, physically inactive, and did not practice physical activities in sunlight. The menarche age was significantly lower in girls with overweight and obesity. Most girls skipped breakfast (53.1%) and watched television (84.8%). We observed a high percentage of adolescents with overweight (65.7%), hypovitaminosis D (78.4%) and high levels of triglycerides (69.6%). We did not find an association between hypovitaminosis D and some recorded metabolic parameters (glycemia, glycated hemoglobin, insulin, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides). However, insulin levels, HOMA-IR, HDL-c, and systolic blood pressure were significantly associated with overweight and obesity, and our results may reflect the characteristics of the study sample and suggest that obese children may already exhibit early signs and risk factors for these chronic diseases during childhood, consistent with national and international data. Conclusions: The identification of metabolic alterations, nutritional status and lifestyle enables early and directed interventions, which may lead to the present and future cardiometabolic health improvements relative to adolescents. Red Blood Cell Parameters, Iron Metabolism and Vitamin B12 Status in Children with Obesity: Associations with Diet and Obesity-Related Complications

Aim: To assess abnormalities in red blood cell parameters, iron metabolism, and vitamin B12 status in children with obesity, and to evaluate the influence of dietary intake and obesity-related complications on these variables. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted in 152 children with obesity. Anthropometric, biochemical, and hematological parameters were assessed. Dietary intake was evaluated in a subgroup of 33 participants using 3-day food records. Results: No cases of low hemoglobin levels were identified. However, elevated TIBC and occasional low ferritin levels suggested disturbances in iron metabolism. BMI Z-score was positively associated with red blood cell count and selected iron metabolism markers, whereas higher body fat percentage was negatively associated with hemoglobin and hematocrit. Dietary analysis indicated that protein and vitamin B12 intake were associated with erythrocyte parameters, while no associations were found for iron or folate intake. Elevated liver enzymes were associated with higher hemoglobin, hematocrit, and MCV values. Conclusions: Pediatric obesity was not associated with low hemoglobin levels but may be linked to early, subclinical disturbances in iron metabolism. These findings should be confirmed using more comprehensive biomarkers. Dietary factors, particularly vitamin B12 intake, may contribute to variability in erythrocyte parameters; however, these associations should be interpreted with caution. The observed relationship between liver function and erythrocyte indices warrants further investigation. Full article
