Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The relationship between diet, body composition, and athletic performance has become a central topic in contemporary sports science. Optimal nutritional strategies play a crucial role in supporting training adaptations, maintaining health, improving recovery, and maximizing competitive performance across different sports disciplines. At the same time, body composition characteristics, including fat mass, lean body mass, and body fat distribution, significantly influence physiological efficiency, movement economy, strength, power, endurance, and overall athletic success.

This review aims to synthesize current evidence regarding the complex interactions between dietary intake, body composition, and athletic performance. Particular attention is given to energy availability, macronutrient distribution, nutrient timing, hydration strategies, and the role of dietary supplements in supporting athletic development. Furthermore, the review examines contemporary methods for assessing body composition and discusses sport-specific body composition profiles associated with elite performance. Recent findings highlight that individualized nutrition plans, tailored to the physiological demands of specific sports and the characteristics of individual athletes, can positively influence body composition outcomes and enhance performance indicators.
