Advanced Carrier Systems Functionalized with Bioactive Compounds Recovered from Food and Agri-Food By-Products
This special issue belongs to the section "Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods, and Novel Foods".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing demand for sustainable food production and the principles of the circular economy have increased interest in the valorization of food and agro-industrial by-products as valuable sources of bioactive compounds. Many of these by-products are rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, dietary fibers, proteins, pigments, and other functional ingredients with great potential for applications in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical products. However, their practical use is often limited by their low stability, sensitivity to processing and storage conditions, and reduced bioavailability.
To overcome these challenges, advanced carrier systems are increasingly being explored as effective solutions for the protection, stabilization, and controlled delivery of bioactive compounds recovered from industrial residues. Different approaches, including nano- and microencapsulation systems, lipid-based carriers, hydrogels, and biopolymer-based materials, can significantly improve the functionality and applicability of these natural compounds. In addition, the development of sustainable carrier materials and green processing technologies contributes to reducing waste and promoting more environmentally friendly production practices.
In this context, the Special Issue will gather original research articles, short communications, and review papers focused on advanced carrier systems functionalized with bioactive compounds recovered from food and agro-industrial by-products. Topics of interest include innovative recovery methods, carrier design and characterization, stability and bioavailability studies, controlled release mechanisms, and potential applications in food and related industries. Such studies may provide valuable insights for both researchers and industry professionals working to develop more sustainable and functional product development.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
