Immunity and Inflammation in Neurological Diseases

Dear Colleagues,

The correspondence between the inflammatory immune response and the central nervous system (CNS) is not just a secondary reaction to injury but a fundamental and constant crosstalk that directs brain health, functions, and degeneration in the nervous system. Our understanding of the neuro-immune axis goes beyond inflammation as a symptom to explore immune cells that act as a primary driver of pathophysiological conditions, ranging from Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and stroke to psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. The traditional niches of neurology and psychiatry are increasingly influenced by our growing understanding of the immune system’s role in brain health. The CNS is considered an immune-privileged system and largely isolated from the body’s inflammatory processes. However, it is now a well-accepted fact that this neuro-immune fortress does not act in isolation.

This Special Issue will explore the immunology of neuroinflammation and neuroscience and their crosstalk in depression and anxiety, as well as in neurodegenerative diseases. We welcome original research articles, systematic/comprehensive review articles, and case reports that explore neuro-immune integration in neuroinflammation and psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.), as well as in neurodegenerative diseases, to characterize the functional role of the immune system in CNS diseases and disorders through experimental and computational approaches. The scope includes, but is not limited to, the mechanisms behind neuro-immune integration, neuronal homeostasis, immune responses in neurodegeneration, and omics-based studies, as well as clinical and preclinical studies. This Special Issue will strengthen neuro-immune integration in neuropsychiatry and diagnosis and therapeutics in neuronal diseases.
