Cover Story: According to the literature, charcoal can be used as an additive in anaerobic digestion (AD) to increase the yield or to stabilise the process. Unfortunately, charcoal is rarely described in detail in terms of its raw material sources, production processes or structural, physical and chemical properties. However, this would be necessary to enable a correlation with its effects on AD. Therefore, we describe the production of charcoal with regard to process temperatures, treatment times, yields, physical and structural changes such as dimensions (shrinkage), density changes, pore size distribution, ash content, volatile matter content and elemental composition of charcoal cubes from pine (Pinus sylvestris) and beech (Fagus sylvatica).
